2021 Portuguese Local Elections
Local elections in Portugal were held on 26 September 2021. The election consisted of three separate elections in the 308 Municipalities of Portugal, Portuguese municipalities: the election for the Câmara Municipal, Municipal Chamber (the executive branch of the municipality), whose winner is automatically elected mayor, similar to First-past-the-post voting, first-past-the-post (FPTP); another election for the Assembleia Municipal, Municipal Assembly (the deliberative branch of the municipality); and an election for the Assembleia de freguesia, Parish Assembly (the deliberative branch of the lower-level Freguesia, parish), whose winner is elected Junta de freguesia, parish president. This last one was held separately in the more than 3,000 parishes around the country. Municipalities Of Portugal
The municipality ( or ) is the second-level Administrative divisions of Portugal, administrative subdivision of Portugal, as defined by the Constitution of Portugal, 1976 Constitution. As a general rule, each municipality is further subdivided into freguesia, parishes (''freguesias''); the municipalities in the north of the country usually have a higher number of parishes. Six municipalities are composed of only one parish, and Barcelos Municipality, Portugal, Barcelos, with 61 parishes, has the most. Corvo (Azores), Corvo is, by law, the only municipality with no parishes. Socialist Party (Portugal)
The Socialist Party ( , PS) is a social democracy, social democratic List of political parties in Portugal, political party in Portugal. It was founded on 19 April 1973 in the German city of Bad Münstereifel by militants who were at the time with the Portuguese Socialist Action (). The PS is a member of the Socialist International, Progressive Alliance and Party of European Socialists, and has eight members in the European Parliament within the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats group during the Tenth European Parliament, 10th European Parliament. Cable News Network Portugal, also known as CNN Portugal and abbreviated as CNN PT, is a Portuguese basic cable and satellite television news channel owned by Media Capital. It was launched on 26 February 2009 as TVI 24, the 24-hour news channel of the terrestrial network Televisão Independente. The network's name was then changed to CNN Portugal on 22 November 2021. Media Capital has a licensing agreement with the American news channel CNN Worldwide owned by Warner Bros. Discovery's EMEA division. () is a Portuguese weekly newspaper published in Lisbon, Portugal. Established since 1864, the paper is considered a newspaper of record for Portugal. History and profile ''Diário de Notícias'' was first published in Lisbon on 29 December 1864 by Tomás Quintino Antunes and Eduardo Coelho. At its early phase the paper had no explicit political stance and financially relied on the advertisements. Its headquarters is in Lisbon. Carlos Moedas
Carlos Manuel Félix Moedas (born 10 August 1970) is a Portuguese civil engineer, economist and politician of the Social Democratic Party (Portugal), Social Democratic Party (PSD), who is the current Mayor of Lisbon. From 2014 until 2019, Moedas served as European Commissioner covering the portfolio of European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Research, Science and Innovation under the leadership of President of the European Commission, President Jean-Claude Juncker. Fernando Medina Maciel Almeida Correia (born 10 March 1973) is a Portuguese economist and politician Socialist Party (PS) who served as Minister of Finance in the government of Prime Minister António Costa from 2022 to 2024. He previously served as Mayor of Lisbon from 2015, succeeding Costa, to 2021. Early life and education Medina was born in Porto to Edgar Marciel Almeida Correia and Maria Helena Guimarães Medina. 2021 Lisbon Local Election
The 2021 Lisbon local election was held on 26 September 2021 to elect the members of the Lisbon City Council. In what was the biggest surprise of the 2021 municipal elections, Carlos Moedas, the candidate of the center-right coalition led by the Social Democratic Party, managed to be elected Mayor of Lisbon and put an end to 14 years of Socialist rule. Against all expectations, the center-right coalition managed to regain the capital by winning 34.3 percent of the votes and 7 councilors. Despite his victory, Carlos Moedas had to seek understandings with the other parties represented in the City Council. The big loser in this election was Fernando Medina, candidate of the Socialist Party (which ran in alliance with LIVRE), as he lost his reelection bid, an office he had hold since 2015 and which had been in Socialist hands since 2007. Barcelos, Portugal
Barcelos () is a city and a municipality in Braga District in the Minho Province, in the north of Portugal. The population in 2011 was 120,391, in an area of 378.90 km2. With 60 parishes, it is the municipality with the highest number of parishes in the country. It is one of the growing municipalities in the country, and is well known for its textile and adobe industries, as well as its horseback riding events and "figurado" style of pottery, which are comical figurines with accentuated features of farmers, folk musicians, and nativity scene characters.
