The Japanese occupation of Nauru was the period of three years (26 August 1942 – 13 September 1945) during which Nauru, a Pacific island which at that time was under Australian administration, was occupied by the Japanese military as part of its operations in the Pacific War during World War II. Kinza Clodumar
Kinza Godfrey Clodumar (8 February 1945 – 29 November 2021) was a Nauruan politician who served as President of Nauru from 1997 to 1998. Background Clodumar was born in Boe. He was a member of the indigenous population of Nauru, and he was concerned with environmental issues. He was a Member of Parliament for many years. Clodumar was the only Nauruan politician to have been elected to parliament in two different constituencies. He served his first two terms for the Aiwo Constituency when ousting Itubwa Amram in the 1971 elections; after being re-elected thrice Clodumar resigned his post in early 1979, but was re-elected in the 1983 elections. In 1992, he did not stand for the seat and moved to the neighbouring Boe Constituency, where he was re-elected in 1995 to serve a third term in parliament. The Nauru Electoral Commission (NEC) is the body which oversees elections in Nauru. History Before the NEC, Nauruan elections were administered by the chief secretary, who was a political appointment by the president. The NEC was established in March 2016, after parliament passed the Electoral Act. Shortly after its establishment, the NEC was provided with technical assistance from the Commonwealth of Nations ahead of the 2016 parliamentary election. Joseph Cain was first appointed Electoral Commissioner. He served from 2016 to 2020. His successor, former deputy electoral commissioner Sylvana Deireragea was appointed in 2020. A constitutional referendum was held in Nauru on 13 November 2021. The referendum was the result of government proposal to amend article 31 of the constitution to bar naturalised citizens and their descendants from becoming members of parliament, or holding the presidency or ministerial posts.
