2021 Assam Earthquake
The 2021 Assam earthquake struck 11 km (7 miles) away from Dhekiajuli, Assam, India at 07:51 (IST) on April 28, 2021 with a richter scale magnitude of 6.4. The quake struck at a depth of 34 km (21 miles), 140 km (86 miles) north of the main city of Guwahati. It resulted in two fatalities and at least 12 injuries. Tectonic setting The tectonics of the Assam region is dominated by convergence of the India, Burma and Eurasian plates. Major fault structures like the Main Frontal Thrust, Main Boundary Thrust and Main Central Thrust, all splay branches of the Main Himalayan Thrust, accommodate the shortening rate as India is pushing into Asia. 2016 Imphal Earthquake
The 2016 Imphal earthquake struck northeast India in the state of Manipur on January 4 with a moment magnitude of 6.7 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VII (''Very strong''). Its epicentre was located in the Tamenglong district; about 30 km west of Imphal. At least 11 people were killed, 200 others were injured and numerous buildings were damaged. The quake was also strongly felt in Bangladesh. It was also extensively felt in eastern and north-eastern India. The earthquake, which hit at 4:35 a.m. on 4 January local time (23:05 UTC, 3 January), was centered in an isolated area. Imphal has a population of more than 250,000. The 1869 Cachar earthquake occurred on 10 January with an estimated moment magnitude of 7.4 and a maximum EMS-98 intensity of VII (''Damaging''). 2009 Bhutan Earthquake
The 2009 Bhutan earthquake occurred on 21 September at 14:53 BTT (08:53 UTC) in the eastern region of Bhutan with moment magnitude of 6.1. The epicenter was situated at east of the capital Thimphu, in Monggar District. However, Bangladesh and northern India also felt it, with residents in Guwahati, Assam reporting cracks in buildings. National Centre For Seismology
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) is an office of India's Ministry of Earth Sciences. The office monitors earthquakes and conducts seismological research. Specifically, it provides earthquake surveillance and hazard reports to governmental agencies.
