2020 Úrvalsdeild
The 2020 Úrvalsdeild karla (football), Úrvalsdeild karla, also known as ''Pepsi-deild karla'' for sponsorship reasons, was the 109th season of top-flight Football in Iceland, Icelandic football. Twelve teams contested the league, including the defending champions Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur, KR, who won their 27th league title in 2019 Úrvalsdeild, 2019. The season was scheduled to begin on 22 April 2020 and conclude on 26 September 2020, however this was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Iceland, COVID-19 pandemic. The competition was suspended on 7 October and abandoned on 30 October 2020. The standings based on the average number of points per matches played for each team were considered final and used to determine the champions, European spots and relegation. Úrvalsdeild Karla (football)
The Besta deild karla () is a professional association football league in Iceland and the highest level of the Icelandic football league system. The competition was founded in 1912 as the Icelandic Championship. Because of the harsh winters in Iceland, it is generally played in the spring and summer (April to September). It is governed by the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) and has 12 teams. By the end of the 2022–23 season, UEFA ranked the league No. 48 in Europe. From 27 April 2009 to 2022, the league had an active agreement on the league's name rights with Ölgerðin, the Icelandic franchisee for Pepsi. From the 2019 season to the end of the 2021 season, the league was popularly referred to as Pepsi Max deildin (The Pepsi Max League). Knattspyrnufélag Akureyrar (, ), commonly abbreviated to KA, is an Icelandic multi-sport club based in Akureyri in the north of Iceland. The club was founded in 1928. The football team currently plays in Besta deild karla and have won the top flight once in 1989. Club The club offers various sports including football, handball, judo, volleyball and weightlifting. The club crest features a red shield overlaid on a blue shield. Within the red shield is a golden ball, with the letters 'KA' positioned above it in white. Íþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja (, ), commonly known as ÍBV, is an Icelandic multi-sports district association from Vestmannaeyjar off the south coast of Iceland. It was founded in 1903 as Knattspyrnufélag Vestmannaeyja by Björgúlfur Ólafsson, military doctor for the Dutch army. It was soon renamed to Knattspyrnufélag Vestmannaeyja (KV) and then to Íþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja (ÍBV) héraðssamband in 1945. ÍBV played as KV in the first Úrvalsdeild, Icelandic first league tournament in 1912 Úrvalsdeild, 1912. Grindavík Men's Football
Grindavík () is a fishing town in the Southern Peninsula district of Iceland, not far from Þorbjörn, a tuya (a type of flat-topped, steep-sided volcano). It is one of the few towns with a harbour on this coast. Most of the inhabitants work in the fishing industry. The Blue Lagoon, Grindavík's première attraction, is located from the town. In November 2023, in the midst of escalating and severe seismic activity, a state of emergency was declared and the town evacuated. On 18 December 2023, at around 22:00 local time ( GMT), the Sundhnúkur volcano erupted. The eruption was close to Hagafell, about northeast of Grindavík. Garðabær () is a town and municipality in the Capital Region of Iceland. History Garðabær is a growing town in the Capital Region. It is the fifth largest municipality in Iceland with a population of 20,116 (1 January 2025). The site of Garðabær has been inhabited since Iceland was first settled in the 9th century. Landnámabók, the Book of Settlement, tells of two farms on the site of Garðabær: Vífilsstaðir and Skúlastaðir. Hafnarfjörður, officially Hafnarfjarðarkaupstaður, is a port town and municipality in Iceland, located about south of Reykjavík. The municipality consists of two non-contiguous areas in the Capital Region (Iceland), Capital Region, on the southwest coast of the country. At about 31,500 inhabitants, Hafnarfjörður is the third-most populous city in Iceland after Reykjavík and Kópavogur. Handknattleiksfélag Kópavogs ("Kópavogur Handball Club"), commonly abbreviated to HK, is an Icelandic sports club from the town of Kópavogur. There are six divisions within the club and they are: handball, Association football, football (soccer), volleyball, dance, table tennis and bandy. History The club dates back to 1969, but was officially established on 26 January 1970. They were originally only a handball team, with the football team established in 1992. They bounced around in lower divisions until, in the summer of 2007 Úrvalsdeild, 2007 they first played in the Icelandic top division, the Úrvalsdeild. Kópavogur () is a town in Iceland that is the country's second-largest municipality by population. It lies immediately south of Reykjavík and is part of the Capital Region (Iceland), Capital Region. Seltjarnarnes () is a town and municipality in the Capital Region of Iceland. The municipality is located on a peninsula, bordered only by Reykjavík to the east. It is also the most densely populated municipality in Iceland. It took on its current political form shortly after the Second World War and was formally created as a township in 1947. Knattspyrnufélagið Víkingur (, ) , commonly referred to as Víkingur Reykjavík (to distinguish them from Víkingur Ólafsvík) and internationally known as Vikingur F.C., is a professional Icelandic sports club based in the Fossvogur neighbourhood of Reykjavík. It is one of the oldest sports clubs in Iceland, founded on 21 April 1908. Originally founded as a football club, it is now a multi-sport club that also operates divisions in handball, tennis, table tennis, karate and skiing. All sports include both male and female teams.
