Municipal elections were held in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia on October 17, 2020. Westmount, Nova Scotia
Westmount (2001 pop.: 3,000) is a suburban community in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Geography Located on the west bank of the Sydney River at the point where Sydney Harbour begins, Westmount faces Sydney's downtown. Neighbouring communities include Point Edward, Coxheath and Edwardsville. Education Westmount has two elementary schools, as well as one post-secondary institution. Kentville, Nova Scotia
Kentville is an incorporated town in Nova Scotia. It is the most populous town in the Annapolis Valley. As of 2021, the town's population was 6,630. Its census agglomeration is 26,929. History Kentville owes its location to the Cornwallis River which, downstream from Kentville, becomes a large tidal river at the Minas Basin. The riverbank at the current location of Kentville provided an easy fording point. The Mi'kmaq name for the location was "Penooek". The ford and later the bridge in Kentville made the area an important crossroads for other settlements in the Annapolis Valley. Kentville also marked the limit of navigation of sailing ships. Michael Savage (politician)
Michael John Savage (born May 13, 1960) is a Canadian politician who is currently serving as the 34th lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia. The son of John Savage, he immigrated to Canada with his father from Belfast, Northern Ireland at the age of six. Michael Savage served three terms as a Liberal member of Parliament for the riding of Dartmouth—Cole Harbour from 2004 to 2011, before serving three terms as the mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality from 2012 to 2024. Danielle S. Barkhouse (born 1976) is a Canadian politician who was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 2021. Municipality Of The District Of Chester
The Municipality of the District of Chester is a Nova Scotia district municipality occupying the northeastern half of Lunenburg County, Canada. The district boundary was originally drawn for court sessional purposes, before the existence of elected local government. Cumberland County, Nova Scotia
Cumberland County is a county in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Cumberland was named in 1755 in honour of the Duke of Cumberland to replace Beausejour. The historic county was founded in 1759 when the English system of administration was installed to complement settlement during the Charles Lawrence governorship, and was later divided at the partitioning of the province and in 1840. The area thrived in the 19th century with the development of lumbering, shipbuilding, and coal mining, but rural outmigration and deforestation led to some communities being abandoned in the 20th century. Whitney Pier (2016 population: 4,612) is an urban neighbourhood in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. Prior to the 20th century, this area was known as “Eastmount” or “South Sydney Harbour,” and had long been a fishing and farming district. It is a triangle-shaped area North of the Muggah Creek estuary running along the Eastern shore of Sydney Harbour. New Waterford, Nova Scotia
New Waterford (Scottish Gaelic: ''Port Lairge Ùr'') is an urban community in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality of Nova Scotia, Canada. Geography Formerly known as Barrachois Cove (from barachois, meaning small port, lagoon or pond), its present name is likely derived from the Irish seaport Waterford, from which many early settlers came. Coal mining in the vicinity began as early as 1854 at Lingan and later at Low Point in 1865. New Waterford is located northeast of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Dominion, Nova Scotia
Dominion is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Regional Municipality. It is located immediately west of the larger centre of Glace Bay. Founded in 1906, Dominion got its name from the local Dominion Coal Company and owed its birth to the coal mining industry as did many of the local communities. Coal was king, and remnants of many old mine workings still run under the town. The local school, MacDonald High sank slightly into one of these mine workings and subsequently had to be torn down.
