2020 Rot Am See Shooting
On 24 January 2020, six people were killed and two others were wounded in a mass shooting in Rot am See, Germany. One suspect, a 26-year-old German citizen, was arrested after reporting himself to the police. Shooting The shooting either occurred inside a restaurant or inside a train station and a nearby house. The motive is suspected to be a family dispute. Three men and three women were killed, aged from 36 to 69. The victims were family members of the shooter, including his parents. The shooting happened around 12:45 local time (11:45 UTC). German authorities on Saturday increased their investigation into the motivation behind the shooting. Criminologist and criminal psychologist Rudolf Egg said that the shooter acted impulsively and explosively, ruling out the possibility that the attack was premeditated. Thomas Karl Leonard Kemmerich (born 20 February 1965) is a German politician of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) who served as the Minister-President of Thuringia from 5 February to 4 March 2020. With a tenure of only 28 days (3 days if his time as acting officeholder is excluded), he has been both the shortest-serving Minister-President of Thuringia and the shortest-serving head of a state government in the Federal Republic of Germany (as of 2024). After Reinhold Maier, who had served as minister-president of Württemberg-Baden (1945–1952) and, after the state's fusion with two other southwestern states, of the new state Baden-Württemberg (1952–1953), he was the second minister-president from the FDP in German history. The 2020 Thuringian government crisis, also known as the Thuringia crisis, was triggered by the election of Thomas Kemmerich (Free Democratic Party (Germany), FDP) as Thuringian Minister President with votes from the Alternative for Germany, AfD, Christian Democratic Union of Germany, CDU and FDP on 5 February 2020.
