2020 Ditrău Xenophobic Incident
The 2020 Ditrău xenophobic incident refers to the incident that started on 26 January 2020 in the village of Ditrău (), Harghita County, in Romania, in which around 1,800 ethnically Hungarians, Hungarian locals protested the employment of two, later three, Sri Lankan workers by the bakery Ditrói Pékség. The locals, led by the chaplain of the village, protested that the bakery's Labor rights, working conditions dissatisfied them and that they feared the immigrants could impose their culture and threaten the Hungarian local ethnic identity. On 11 February, a petition signed by 1,800 people was sent to the town hall of the village with several demands, among them, the improvement of the working conditions, the end of immigration to the village and compensations and apologies to the population. Ditrău
Ditrău (; or ) is a commune in Harghita County, Transylvania, Romania. It is composed of three villages: Ditrău, Jolotca (''Orotva''), and Țengheler (''Csengellér'' or ''Cengellér''). Geography The commune is situated between the Gurghiu and the mountains, above sea level, with the highest point being the Piricske height. It lies on the banks of the river Ditrău, which discharges here in the Mureș River. Ditrău is located in the northern part of Harghita County, north of Gheorgheni and south of Toplița. The county seat, Miercurea Ciuc, is to the south. History Ditrău was first registered in 1567, as Gitró, with 26 gates. The villages belonged first to the Székely seat of Gyergyószék, which was subsequently absorbed into Csíkszék, until the administrative reform of Transylvania in 1876, when they fell within the Csík County in the Kingdom of Hungary. The politics of Hungary take place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic. Ioan-Aurel Pop (born 1 January 1955) is a Romanian historian. Pop was appointed Professor of History at Babeș-Bolyai University in 1996.
