2020 Christian Democratic Appeal Leadership Election
The 2020 Christian Democratic Appeal leadership election was called to elect the new Leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal, leader and lead candidate (''lijsttrekker'') of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) in the run-up to the 2021 Dutch general election. Background The position of party leader of the CDA had been vacant since the appointment of incumbent party leader Sybrand van Haersma Buma as mayor of Leeuwarden in May 2019. The CDA has no formal procedure in place for selecting a replacement. Initially, the party had intended to promote its leader in the House of Representatives (Netherlands), House of Representatives, Pieter Heerma, to the position of party leader, but Heerma declined this offer. Hugo De Jonge
Hugo Mattheüs de Jonge (; born 26 September 1977) is a Dutch politician serving as Minister of Housing and Spatial Planning since 2022 in the Fourth Rutte cabinet. A member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), he was elected to its leadership in 2020 for the 2021 Dutch general election. He withdrew later that year, citing an impossibility to combine his position as Health Minister in charge of the COVID-19 pandemic efforts with his party leadership. Gerhardine Ruth Peetoom (born 25 July 1967) is a Dutch politician of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). She is the Party Chair of the Christian Democratic Appeal since 2 April 2011. Biography Peetoom is born in the province of North Brabant and grew up in the eastern part of the province of Groningen. She studied theology and ethics at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Being a preacher of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands (PKN), she has been employed at the St. Nicholaschurch (''Nicolaïkerk'') in Utrecht since 2006. From 1999 to 2005 she was a CDA member of the States-Provincial of Groningen. Ferdinand Bernhard Joseph "Ferd" Grapperhaus (born 8 November 1959) is a Dutch politician who served as Minister of Justice and Security in the Third Rutte cabinet from 26 October 2017 until 10 January 2022.
