2019 Abancay Landslide
A landslide on 27 January 2019 in Abancay, Peru, killed at least 15 people and injured 34 more when it destroyed part of a hotel during a wedding celebration. The celebration at the Alhambra Hotel was attended by 100 people at the time of the landslide, which caused the building to collapse. The landslide was triggered by heavy rains from earlier in the day. Landslides, also known as landslips, rockslips or rockslides, are several forms of mass wasting that may include a wide range of ground movements, such as rockfalls, mudflows, shallow or deep-seated slope failures and debris flows. Abancay (from Quechuan languages, Quechua language: Hamanqay, Amanqay, or Amankay, meaning ''lily''), founded in 1572 as Santiago de los Reyes de Abancay, is a city in southern-central Peru. It is the capital of both the Apurímac Region and the Abancay Province, and serves an important cultural, economic, and political role in Apurímac. The Weather Channel (TWC) is an American pay television television channel, channel owned by Weather Group, LLC, a subsidiary of Allen Media Group.
