2019 1. Deild Karla
The 2019 1. deild karla (English: ''Men's First Division'') was the 65th season of second-tier Icelandic football. Twelve teams contested the league. The season began on 4 May and concluded on 21 September. Teams The league was contested by twelve clubs. Eight remained in the division from the 2018 season, while four new clubs joined the 1. deild karla: * Fjölnir and Keflavík were relegated from the 2018 Úrvalsdeild, replacing ÍA and HK who were promoted to the 2019 Úrvalsdeild. * Afturelding and Grótta were promoted from the 2018 2. deild karla, in place of ÍR and Selfoss who were relegated to the 2019 2. deild karla. Íþróttafélagið Grótta
Íþróttafélagið Grótta (English: ''Grótta Sports Club''; ) is an Icelandic sports club based in the town of Seltjarnarnes, in the Capital Region. The club is best known for its women's handball team that won the national championship in 2015 and 2016, but also has departments for gymnastics, football and powerlifting. History Grótta was officially founded on 24 April 1967 by Garðar Guðmundsson, a football supporter from Seltjarnarnes who had begun the process of forming a club the previous year. Initially the club had only a football team but later expanded to include handball (1969), gymnastics (1985) and powerlifting (2013). The club has over the years tried to incorporate sports including basketball, skiing and chess but they have all failed. On 24 April 2007, the club held a festival to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its foundation.
