2018 Utah Proposition 4
Utah Proposition 4 was a ballot measure narrowly approved as part of the 2018 Utah elections. The proposition created an independent redistricting commission in the state, a measure to avoid gerrymandering. In 2020, the Utah legislature passed Senate Bill 200 which compromised positions between Better Boundaries Utah (the sponsor of the proposition) and the Utah legislature. Independent Redistricting Commission
In the United States, a redistricting commission is a body, other than the usual state legislative bodies, established to draw electoral district boundaries. Generally the intent is to avoid gerrymandering, or at least the appearance of gerrymandering, by specifying a nonpartisan or bipartisan body to comprise the commission drawing district boundaries. Gerrymandering
In representative democracies, gerrymandering (, originally ) is the political manipulation of electoral district boundaries with the intent to create undue advantage for a party, group, or socioeconomic class within the constituency. The manipulation may involve "cracking" (diluting the voting power of the opposing party's supporters across many districts) or "packing" (concentrating the opposing party's voting power in one district to reduce their voting power in other districts). The Utah State Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Utah. It is a bicameral body, comprising the Utah House of Representatives, with 75 state representatives, and the Utah Senate, with 29 state senators. There are no term limits for either chamber. Lieutenant Governor Of Utah
The office of the lieutenant governor of Utah was created in 1975. Nine people have held the position since then. Prior to the creation of the lieutenant governor's office, the succession to the governorship of Utah was held by the Utah Secretary of State. The office of the secretary of state was abolished by the state legislature in 1976, and its duties were given to the newly created Office of the lieutenant governor.
