2018 State Basketball League Season
The 2018 State Basketball League season was the 30th season of the State Basketball League (SBL). The regular season began on Friday 16 March and ended on Saturday 28 July. The finals began on Friday 3 August and concluded with the women's grand final on Friday 31 August and the men's grand final on Saturday 1 September. Pre-season The 2018 SBL Pre-Season Blitz was held at Warwick Stadium over Saturday 3 March and Sunday 4 March. Regular season The regular season began on Friday 16 March and ended on Saturday 28 July after 20 rounds of competition. Easter games in round 3 were again scheduled for Thursday night, with all teams then on a break over the long weekend. Anzac Round took place in round 6 of the competition with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns and Willetton Tigers continuing their Anzac Day game tradition. State Basketball League
NBL1 West, formerly the State Basketball League (SBL), is a semi-professional basketball league in Western Australia, comprising both a men's and women's competition. In 2020, Basketball Western Australia partnered with the National Basketball League (Australia), National Basketball League (NBL) to bring NBL1 to Western Australia. NBL1 replaced the former SBL to create more professional pathways and opportunities for males and females playing basketball in Western Australia. As a result, the SBL became the west conference of NBL1. History The State Basketball League originated in 1972 as the District Competition. Cockburn Cougars
Cockburn Cougars is an NBL1 West club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club fields a team in both the Men's and Women's NBL1 West. The club is a division of Cockburn Basketball Association (CBA), the major administrative basketball organisation in the City of Cockburn. The Cougars play their home games at Wally Hagan Stadium. Club history Background Cockburn Basketball Association was established in 1972. The association saw success in the 1980s, with the men's team reaching the grand final of the District Competition in 1982 before going on to win their first premiership in 1984. The women's team meanwhile reached four straight grand finals between 1983 and 1986, losing in close encounters all four years. Drew Williamson
Drew Williamson (born 15 December 1983) is an Australian former professional basketball player. He played four years of college basketball in the United States, two for the Fordham Rams and two for the MSU Denver Roadrunners. He made his debut in the National Basketball League (NBL) in 2006 and played six seasons, winning an NBL championship with the Perth Wildcats in 2010. In the State Basketball League (SBL), he played nine seasons for the East Perth Eagles and won an SBL championship in 2014. Shawn Redhage
Shawn Michael Redhage (born 21 January 1981) is an American-Australian former professional basketball player who played 13 seasons in the National Basketball League (Australia), National Basketball League (NBL). He played four years of college basketball for the Arizona State Sun Devils men's basketball, Arizona State Sun Devils before moving to Australia in 2004 to play professionally. After spending time in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) and with the New Zealand Breakers, Redhage joined the Perth Wildcats in 2005 and went on to played 12 seasons for the team. Red Frogs
Red Frogs Australia is a Christian Youth charity run by volunteers known as the 'Red Frogs Crew'. The volunteers participate in many events that are attended by school leavers and university students such as schoolies week. Since 1997, Allens' has donated over 24 tonnes of the red frog confectionery every year. The Crew's vision is to "safeguard a generation" that is outworked through education, early intervention and harm minimisation. Origin In 1997, founder Andy Gourley attended schoolies week on the Gold Coast with some of his friends and had an impression that a large amount of binge drinking and illicit drug use were taking place. Gourley gathered a select group of young volunteers to provide chaplaincy support for the school leavers. Ashleigh Grant
Ashleigh Isenbarger (née Grant; born 15 May 1997) is an Australian professional basketball player who last played for the Perry Lakes Hawks of the NBL1 West. Early life Isenbarger represented Western Australia at the 2015 under-20 national championships, where WA earned a silver medal. Basketball career SBL / NBL1 West Isenbarger made her debut in the State Basketball League (SBL) for the Lakeside Lightning in 2012. In 2015, she earned SBL Most Improved Player honours. In 2018, she helped the Lightning win the championship while earning SBL All-Defensive Five honours. List Of NBL1 West Champions
The champion teams of the NBL1 West, formerly the State Basketball League (SBL), are determined annually by a grand final weekend hosted by Basketball Western Australia. All grand finals have been played in a one-game championship decider, except in 1995 when a best-of-three series was used. In 2010, the WA Basketball Centre hosted the grand finals for the first time. In 2024, the grand final host venue shifted to Perth Arena. Brian Carlwell
Brian Andrew Carlwell (born October 18, 1987) is an American basketball coach and former player. He played college basketball for Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball, Illinois and San Diego State Aztecs men's basketball, San Diego State before playing professionally in Australia, Argentina and Japan. Best known for his time spent in Australia, Carlwell is a two-time List of State Basketball League champions, SBL champion, having won his first in 2012 with the Cockburn Cougars and his second in 2018 with the Perry Lakes Hawks.
