2018 Southampton City Council Election
Elections to Southampton City Council took place on Thursday 3 May 2018, alongside nationwide local elections, alongside other local elections across the country. The elections saw no changes in the overall composition of the council, however saw seats being exchanged. The Labour Party lost Bitterne, Millbrook and Peartree to the Conservative party while the Conservatives lost Freemantle, Portswood and Swaythling to Labour. This led to the Labour leader of the council, Simon Letts, and the leader of the Conservative group in the city, Jeremy Moulton, losing their seats. Background and Campaigning In the lead up to the election, the BBC had summarised that the situation in Southampton for the Labour Party was incredibly precarious and one seat loss could deprive the party of a majority. Southampton City Council
Southampton City Council is the local authority of the city of Southampton in the ceremonial county of Hampshire, England. Southampton has had a council since medieval times, which has been reformed on numerous occasions. Since 1997 the council has been a unitary authority, being a district council which also performs the functions of a county council; it is independent from Hampshire County Council. 2014 Southampton City Council Election
The 2014 Southampton City Council election took place on Thursday 22 May 2014 to elect members of Southampton City Council in Hampshire, England. One third of the council (16 seats) was up for election, and an additional vacancy in Millbrook ward caused by the resignation of a sitting councillor who had been elected in 2012 was also filled, meaning a total of 17 of the city's 48 seats were elected. The elections took place on the same day as the elections to the European Parliament. Southampton Council is elected in thirds, which means the all comparisons are to the corresponding 2010 Southampton City Council election. In Millbrook, the candidate with the most votes was elected for a full term lasting until 2018. The candidate who came second was elected for the remainder of the resigned councillor's term, ending in 2016. Southampton Terminus Railway Station
Southampton Terminus railway station served the Port of Southampton and Southampton City Centre, England from 1840 until 1966. The station was authorised on 25 July 1834 and built as the terminus of the London and Southampton Railway, which later changed its name to the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). The station opened as "Southampton" on 11 May 1840 due to the track not being fully linked between Winchester and Basingstoke. The station building was constructed in 1839–40 to the design of Sir William Tite. The LSWR added the much larger South Western Hotel building, designed by John Norton, in 1872. Ocean Village, Southampton
Ocean Village is a mixed-use marina, residential, business and leisure development on the mouth of the River Itchen in Southampton, on the south coast of England. Originally the site of Southampton's first working docks, the "Outer Dock" which opened in 1842, the area was redeveloped in 1986 and became the leisure marina it is today. After experiencing a period of stalled development with the late-2000s recession, Ocean Village underwent another series of major, multimillion-pound redevelopment projects. Current recreational facilities include a cinema, cafes, wine bars and restaurants. St Mary's Stadium is a seated but also safe-standing football stadium in Southampton, Hampshire, England, which has been the home stadium of club Southampton since 2001.
