Caroline Wozniacki and Simona Halep were in contention for the WTA no. 1 singles ranking at the beginning of the tournament. Known for her powerful left-handed groundstrokes and variety, Kvitová has won 29 career singles titles, including two major titles at Wimbledon in 2011 and in 2014.
