2018 Norrbotten Regional Election ...
Norrbotten County or Region Norrbotten held a regional council election on 9 September 2018, on the same day as the general and municipal elections. Results The number of seats remained at 71 with the Health Care Party winning the most seats at 27, overtaking the Social Democrats at 23, after having trailed the Social Democrats by eight seats in 2014. The Health Care Party became the first party to supplant the Social Democrats as the largest party in any election in Norrbotten in the post world-war era. The party received 34.7% compared to 29.6% for the Social Democrats. Norrbotten County
Norrbotten County ( sv, Norrbottens län; se, Norrbottena leatna, fi, Norrbottenin lääni) is the northernmost county or '' län'' of Sweden. It is also the largest county by land area, almost a quarter of Sweden's total area. It shares borders with Västerbotten County to the southwest, the Gulf of Bothnia to the southeast, the counties of Nordland and Troms og Finnmark in Norway to the northwest, and Lapland Province in Finland to the northeast. The name "Norrbotten" is also used for a province of the same name. Norrbotten province covers only the eastern part of Norrbotten County – the inland mostly belongs to the Swedish Lapland province (''Lappland''). The capital of Norrbotten is Luleå, whereas other significant towns include Boden, Kiruna and Piteå. Arjeplog Municipality
Arjeplog Municipality (Swedish: ''Arjeplogs kommun'', sme, Arjepluovvi gielda; sje, Árjepluove komuvdna) is a municipality in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Arjeplog. The area, which now is Arjeplog Municipality, used to be a single parish (Swedish: ''socken''), which was made into a municipality when the first Swedish local government acts were implemented in 1863. It has not been amalgamated with any other entity. In terms of geographical area, Arjeplog is one of Sweden's largest, but it is also the country's least densely populated municipality. Övertorneå Municipality
Övertorneå Municipality (, ) is a municipality in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden, bordering Finland. Its seat is located in Övertorneå. Until the Finnish War (1808–1809) Övertorneå and the Finnish Ylitornio were a single parish. Following the war, the eastern part of the municipality was ceded to Russia as a part of Finland. In 1870 a minor part of Övertorneå Municipality was split off, forming the rural municipality Korpilombolo (now part of Pajala Municipality). In 1969 Övertorneå and Hietaniemi municipalities were merged, forming the present municipality. Many places in the municipality have both a Swedish and a Finnish name, in the local dialect of Finnish known as Meänkieli, one of the minority languages of Sweden. Överkalix Municipality
Överkalix Municipality (, ) is a municipality in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Överkalix. In 1870 a part of old Överkalix Municipality was detached from it, forming a municipality called Korpilombolo (now in Pajala Municipality). The municipality was not affected by the two subdivision reforms of the 20th century. The coat of arms was designed in 1944 and based on the arms of the parish. Its exact meaning is not known, but many northern arms feature bears, reindeer or other animals. Geography Överkalix Municipality is situated along the south-going Kalix River. The unmodified scenic nature along the river attracts tourists and fishers every year. Within the municipality one also finds two of the river's most powerful waterfalls, ''Jockfall'' (9 metres fall) and ''Linafall'' (16 metres fall). Älvsbyn Municipality
Älvsbyn Municipality () is a municipality in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Älvsbyn. The present municipality has the same size as the original one, created at the time the municipalities of Sweden were formed in 1863. 1948-1968 a part of it constituted a market town (''köping'') and a municipality of its own, but the entities were reunited in 1969. Pajala Municipality
Pajala Municipality (; fi, Pajalan kunta) is a municipality in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden, bordering Finland. Its seat is located in the locality of Pajala. In 1884 Tärendö was detached from Pajala Municipality, forming a municipality of its own. In 1914 Pajala Municipality was once again split when Junosuando broke away. They were reunited in 1971, when Korpilombolo was added as well. Finnish and Meänkieli have the official status of being minority languages in the municipality. Kalix Municipality
Kalix Municipality (, ) is a municipality in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Kalix. In 1924 Töre Municipality was detached from Nederkalix Municipality, forming a municipality of its own. In 1967 the two units were reunified, and the present municipality was created. History In historical times, Kalix was the name of the court district (Swedish: ''domsaga'') Kalix Lower Court District. It covered two parishes: Nederkalix and Överkalix (litterally ''Lower Kalix'' and ''Upper Kalix'', respectively). The chalice on the coat of arms was present in the Nederkalix coat of arms in 1800, and was incorporated into that of Kalix Municipality in 1989. Haparanda Municipality (), () is a municipality in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Haparanda (). In 1967 the "City of Haparanda" was merged with the rural municipalities Karl Gustav and Nedertorneå. Since 1971 Haparanda, like all other municipalities of Sweden, is a municipality of unitary type.
