2018 Delaware Elections
A general election was held in the U.S. state of Delaware on November 6, 2018. Half of Delaware's executive officers were up for election as well as a United States Senate seat and Delaware's at-large seat in the United States House of Representatives. Partisan primary, Primary elections were held on September 6, 2018. In the general election, Democrats took over all statewide offices and defeated two of the highest ranking Republicans in the Delaware General Assembly. Those races were all won by Democratic women, putting a record number of women in statewide elected offices in Delaware. The Democratic Party became the first party to hold all nine statewide offices in Delaware since the Republican Party in 1970. Kathy McGuiness
Kathleen Kramedas McGuiness (born February 14, 1967) is an American politician who was the Delaware state auditor, from January 2019 until October 2022. In July 2022, she was found guilty on multiple corruption charges. On September 13, 2022, McGuiness lost the Democratic primary election to challenger Lydia York in a 42-point landslide. In October 2022, she was sentenced to one year of probation and was given a $10,000 fine for her corruption convictions. Following her sentencing, McGuiness resigned as auditor. She ran to represent the 14th district in the Delaware House of Representatives in 2024 and was endorsed by retiring representative Peter Schwartzkopf, but lost in the primary election to Claire Snyder-Hall after coming in third place. Colin Bonini
Colin Rafferty Marie Jude Bonini (born April 14, 1965) is an American politician and a Republican former member of the Delaware Senate, where he represented the 16th District from 1994 to 2022. Education Bonini received his Bachelor of Arts from Wesley College in 1991. He received a Master of Public Administration from the University of Delaware in 1999. While in college, he worked for United States Senator Bill Roth and the United States Department of State in New Delhi, India. Political career He was elected in 1994 to represent the 16th District in the Delaware Senate. The district covers part of southern and eastern Kent County along with a small portion of adjacent Sussex County. It includes the southern portions of Dover around the Dover Air Force Base and the towns of Frederica and Harrington. Bryan Townsend (American Politician)
Bryan Jeffrey Schurgard Townsend (born May 19, 1981) is an American politician who represents District 11 in the Delaware Senate. Townsend was elected Senate Majority Leader in 2020. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 2003. As a political newcomer, Townsend defeated Anthony J. DeLuca—who was then President pro tempore of the Delaware Senate—in the 2012 Democratic primary by 57 percent to 42 percent. Townsend went on to defeat Republican Evan Queitsch in the general election, winning 78 percent of the vote. Townsend was reelected in 2014. He defeated primary challenger David L. Stephanie Hansen
Stephanie Leigh Hansen (born July 24, 1961) is an American politician. She is a Democratic member of the Delaware Senate, representing District 10. She was elected in 2017 after winning a special election to fill the seat of Bethany Hall-Long, who had resigned to take office as the state's lieutenant governor. Prior to being elected to the state senate, Hansen served as president of the New Castle County Council. Early life Hansen was born at Loring Air Force Base in 1961 while her father was serving in the U.S. Air Force. Ernesto Lopez
Ernesto B. Lopez (born November 16, 1976) is an American politician and a former Republican member of the Delaware Senate, where he had represented the 6th District from 2012 to 2023. He was the first Latino elected to the Delaware Senate. Born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Lopez moved to Delaware as a child with his parents. Gregory Lavelle
Gregory F. Lavelle is an American politician who was a Republican member of the Delaware General Assembly from 2001 to 2019, serving in both the Delaware Senate and the Delaware House of Representatives. In the 2018 midterm elections, he lost his seat in the general election to Democrat Laura Sturgeon. Lavelle was elected to the Delaware House of Representatives in 2000 to replace Republican Catherine Cloutier, who had won a seat in the Delaware Senate. Laura Viviana Sturgeon (born February 15, 1965) is an American politician. She is a member of the Delaware Senate for District 4 and the first Latina to serve in the Delaware General Assembly. Early life and career Sturgeon was born in Florida and raised in Delaware. Her parents were immigrants from Argentina. Sarah Elizabeth "Tizzy" Lockman is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party.
