2018 Alabama Elections
A general election was held in the U.S. state of Alabama on November 6, 2018. All Alabama executive officers were up for election along with all of Alabama's seven seats in the United States House of Representatives. Primary elections took place on June 5, 2018 for both major parties. Governor Incumbent Republican Party (United States), Republican Governor of Alabama, governor Kay Ivey, who assumed the office upon the resignation of Robert J. Bentley in April 2017, ran for a full term against Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox, Walt Maddox and Independent (politician), independent Write-in candidate, write-in Chad Chig Martin. John Murphy McMillan Jr. (born July 6, 1941) is an American politician who served as the 40th treasurer of Alabama. He was elected as a Republican in November 2010 to the office of Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries. He was elected to a second four-year term in 2014. Young Jacob Boozer III (born November 23, 1948) is an American politician who was the 39th State Alabama State Treasurer, Treasurer of Alabama from 2011 to 2019 and is the 41st Treasurer, having been re-elected to a third term on November 8, 2022. He was elected to his first four-year term in 2010 and was unopposed and reelected to a second term in 2014. Boozer is a member of the National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) currently serving as Chair of the Banking and Cash Management Committee. The Alabama state treasurer acts as the head banker for the State of Alabama, handling deposits, withdrawals, redemptions of state warrants and investments of state funds. The position was created in 1819 when Alabama became a state. Its constitution established the Office of the Treasurer of State, a position to be elected by the legislature. Individuals serving as state treasurer were elected annually by the General Assembly from 1819 to 1861. Beginning in 1861, the treasurer was elected biennially from until 1868 and was elected by popular vote for a term of two years in 1868. Jim Zeigler (born May 23, 1948) is an American lawyer and politician who served as state auditor of Alabama from 2015 to 2023. Before becoming state auditor, he served on the Alabama Public Service Commission from 1974 to 1978. Early life and education While a student at the University of Alabama, Zeigler served as the president of the Student Government Association (SGA). Zeigler lived at Mallet Hall from 1966 to 1970, and served as SGA president from 1970-71. Alabama State Auditor
The state auditor of Alabama is constitutionally required to make a complete report to the governor of Alabama showing the receipts and disbursement of every character, all claims audited and paid out, and all taxes and revenues collected and paid into the treasury. The office also makes other reports to the governor and the Alabama Legislature as the law requires. Since 1969, the office has been responsible for maintaining all property records of all non-consumable property of the State of Alabama. John Harold Merrill (born November 12, 1963) is an American politician who served as the 53rd secretary of state of Alabama from 2015 to 2023.
