South Sudan
South Sudan (), officially the Republic of South Sudan, is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered on the north by Sudan; on the east by Ethiopia; on the south by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Kenya; and on the west by the Central African Republic. South Sudan's diverse landscape includes vast plains and plateaus, dry and tropical savannahs, inland floodplains, and forested mountains. Salva Kiir Mayardit
Salva Kiir Mayardit (born 13 September 1951), commonly known as Salva Kiir, is a South Sudanese politician who is the President of South Sudan since its independence on 9 July 2011. Prior to independence, he was the List of heads of state of South Sudan, President of the Government of Southern Sudan Autonomous Region (2005–2011), Southern Sudan, as well as Vice President of Sudan, First Vice President of Sudan, from 2005 to 2011. He was named Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in 2005, following the death of John Garang. James Wani Igga
James Wani Igga (born 1949) is a South Sudanese politician who has been the secretary general of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement since 10 February 2025. He was the second vice president of South Sudan and chair of the unity government's economic cluster from 21 February 2020 until 10 February 2025. He was speaker of the National Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2013. Early life James Wani Igga was born in 1949. He is variously described to stem from the Bari and Zande ethnic groups and he is a Roman Catholic. He studied at the Cairo University of Economics. Civil war years Igga joined the South Sudanese rebels in 1985, training in Cuba and Ethiopia. 2017 South Sudan Famine
In the early months of 2017, parts of South Sudan experienced a famine following several years of instability in the country's food supply caused by war and drought. The famine, largely focused in the northern part of the country, affected an estimated five million people (nearly 50% of the South Sudanese population). In May 2017, the famine was officially declared to have weakened to a state of severe food insecurity. Background South Sudan suffered the 1998 Sudan famine before its independence, but no famine had been formally declared anywhere in the world during the six years prior to 2017. There are currently warnings of imminent famine in Yemen, Somalia, and the northeastern part of Nigeria, but the formal declaration requires that the following criteria be met: * 20% of households suffer extreme food shortages. * 30% of the population suffers extreme malnutrition. * At least 1 per each 5,000 inhabitants die per day. Unity State
Unity State, also known as Western Upper Nile, is a state in South Sudan. Unity State is in the Greater Upper Nile region. Unity is inhabited predominantly by two ethnic groups: the Nuer majority, and the Dinka minority. In 2015, a presidential decree established a new system of 28 states, replacing the previously established 10. Unity State was replaced by the states of Ruweng, Northern Liech and Southern Liech. Unity State was re-established by a peace agreement signed on 22 February 2020 with smaller boundaries as the northern part of the former state became the Ruweng Administrative Area. Gabriel Tang
Gabriel Gatwech Chan (1960 – 5 January 2017), better known by his nom de guerre Tanginye (meaning "long pipe"), was a South Sudanese military officer and rebel commander of various ethnic Nuer militant groups during the Second Sudanese Civil War and South Sudanese Civil War. During the South Sudanese Civil War, Tanginye allied with the SPLA-IO and later Lam Akol's militia, a Juba linked rebel group called the National Democratic Movement (NDM) and became its chief of staff. In January 2017, he visited a NDM-allied group, the Tiger Faction New Forces, in the Hamra area in the northern Upper Nile. South Sudanese Civil War
The South Sudanese Civil War was a multi-sided civil war in South Sudan fought from 2013 to 2020, between forces of the government and opposition forces. The civil war caused rampant human rights abuses, including forced displacement, ethnic massacres, and killings of journalists by various parties. Since the war's end, South Sudan has been governed by a coalition formed by leaders of the former warring factions, Salva Kiir Mayardit and Riek Machar. The country continues to recover from the war while experiencing ongoing and systemic ethnic violence.
