2017 Gao Bombing
On 18 January 2017, a suicide bomber drove a vehicle filled with explosives into a military camp near Gao, Mali, killing 77 people and injuring at least 115. The incident is the deadliest terrorist attack in Malian history. Incident At around 09:00 local time, a vehicle filled with explosives entered the Joint Operational Mechanism base that housed members of the Military of Mali, Malian Army and former militants who had signed a peace agreement with the government. According to an army spokesman, the vehicle was marked with insignia of the active military unit in the area. Dozens of people were killed, though the exact number was initially unclear—Malian state broadcaster Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision du Mali, ORTM said that 47 were dead, while the President's office estimated there to be 60 fatalities and 115 injured. June 2017 Bamako Attack
On 18 June 2017, gunmen attacked Le Campement Kangaba in Dougourakoro, east of Bamako, Mali, a luxury resort frequented by tourists. Hostages were reported to have been taken and at least 5 people are reported to have been killed, including a Franco-Gabonese civilian, a Chinese citizen and a Portuguese soldier. According to an eyewitness, the attack began when a man on a motorcycle arrived at the compound and fired at the crowd. He was followed by two other assailants. Security forces stationed at the resort held off the attack for several hours while awaiting reinforcements. Once arrived, the United Nations troops managed to rescue around 60 people staying at the resort. Some residents hid in a cave near the resort and managed to avoid the attackers. Abdoulaye Idrissa Maïga
Abdoulaye Idrissa Maïga (born 11 March 1958) is a Malian politician who was the Prime Minister of Mali from 8 April 2017 to 29 December 2017. Previously he was Minister of Defence since 3 September 2016. As Defence Minister he succeeded Tiéman Hubert Coulibaly, who resigned after the takeover of the village of Boni by jihadist forces. Maïga previously served as Minister of Territorial Administration and Minister for the Environment, Water and Sanitation. During the 2013 presidential election, he was campaign director of Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, who was elected as president. On 8 April 2017 President Keïta appointed him as prime minister. A new government headed by Maïga was appointed on 11 April 2017. In the new government, Tiéna Coulibaly succeeded Maïga as Minister of Defence.
