2017 Canadian Championship
The 2017 Canadian Championship was a soccer tournament hosted and organized by the Canadian Soccer Association. It was the tenth edition of the annual Canadian Championship. The 2017 edition saw the introduction of a rule that required three players to be named in the starting eleven of each participating team who are eligible (and have declared their intention, if they had otherwise played for another national team) to play for the Canada men's national soccer team. Due to the restructuring of the CONCACAF Champions League, the winner of the 2017 Canadian Championship would have advanced to a playoff against Toronto FC, the winner of the 2016 Canadian Championship, to be played in Toronto on August 9, 2017, for a place in the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League. Toronto Football Club is a Canadian professional Association football, soccer club based in Toronto. The club competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Eastern Conference (MLS), Eastern Conference. Eddie Edward
Giovanni Edson "Eddie" Edward (born September 20, 1988) is a former Canadian soccer player who played as a defender. Career Youth and college Edward's amateur and collegiate soccer career allowed him to travel across North America. After graduating from the Ottawa Fury's Youth program, Edward began his collegiate duties at the NAIA's Graceland University. In his four years at Graceland, he helped the Jackets to an overall 58–16–8 record while scoring 15 goals and adding 13 assists. In 2006, Edward was part of Graceland's NAIA National Championship-winning squad, while in 2007, he helped the team become Region V and Conference Champions. Benoît Benjamin Cheyrou (born 3 May 1981) is a French former professional footballer who played as a central midfielder, and often acted as a deep-lying playmaker for the attack. He is the assistant manager of French amateur club La Salesienne de Paris. He was known for his vision, distribution, and ability to provide assists, and played for France at under-21 level. David Barrie
David Barrie (born December 12, 1980) is a Canadian professional soccer referee, and is a member of the Professional Referee Organization. He officiates in Major League Soccer, USL Championship, and USL League One in the United States and in the Canadian Premier League in Canada. Career Barrie began officiating at the youth level with the Bedfordshire FA, while he was in Luton, England with his family. Clarke Stadium is a multipurpose stadium located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The stadium was originally built for Canadian football. Over the years different sports have participated at the site. History The stadium was originally built in 1938 and named for then-Mayor Joseph Clarke. It was built on land deeded to the city for the purpose of constructing public sports fields by the federal government (Prime Minister Mackenzie King was a personal friend of Clarke). The original Clarke Stadium accommodated approximately 20,000 fans in the spartan conditions consistent with its era. The seating area consisted of two grandstands on opposing sidelines. Steevan Humberto Fortes dos Santos (born 17 September 1989), also known as "Duba", is a Cape Verdean footballer who played as a forward for Union Omaha of USL League One until his retirement after the 2024 season. Sainey Nyassi (born 31 January 1989) is a Gambian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder. Club career Sainey Nyassi began his career in the Gambia, playing in the GFA League First Division for Gambia Ports Authority. He was scouted by New England Revolution head coach Steve Nicol while playing in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, and signed with the Revolution shortly thereafter along with his Gambian teammate, Kenny Mansally. Jake Keegan (born September 7, 1990) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a forward for USL League One side Portland Hearts of Pine. Youth career Youth Keegan played 4 seasons at John Jay High School helping the team win the 2008 Class AA Section 1 Championship and advancing to the New York State Final Four.
