2017 Caerphilly County Borough Council Election
The 2017 Caerphilly County Borough Council election was held on 4 May 2017 as part of the national 2017 Welsh local elections. The election was preceded by the 2012 CCBC election and will be followed by the 2022 CCBC election. Overall results Plaid Cymru had achieved tremendous growth in the 1999 Caerphilly County Borough Council election gaining a total of 38 seats, This tremendous growth had declined by the 2012 election to just 20 seats. The Independents in Caerphilly County Borough had also suffered sizable losses in the 2012 election going from 9 in 2008 election to 3 in 2012 election. The Labour Party won 50 seats achieving a majority, Plaid Cymru obtained 18 seats and 5 seats were won by independent candidates. The 2012 Caerphilly Council election took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of Caerphilly County Borough Council in Wales. This was on the same day as other Welsh local elections. Election results The Labour Party won control of the council from Plaid Cymru, after gaining an additional 18 seats. Four council candidates were elected unopposed. Among the notable Plaid Cymru defeated councillors were the current mayor, Vera Jenkins (Crumlin ward) and Ron Davies, the ex-Labour Secretary of State for Wales (Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen ward). 2022 Caerphilly County Borough Council Election
The 2022 Caerphilly County Borough Council election was held on 4 May 2022. It was part of a broader round of local elections held on the same day across Great Britain included too every local authority in Wales. The election saw the Labour Party maintain their majority in the council with little change between the parties in overall seat numbers. Background Previous election Process The Local Government and Elections Wales Act 2021 made changes to the election system enabling 16 year olds to vote. Caerphilly County Borough launched a pilot scheme to increase voter participation, this will include being able to vote on the weekend before 5 May. A boundary review reduced the number of seats in the council from 73 to 69. 2017 Welsh Local Elections
The 2017 Welsh local elections were held on 4 May 2017 to elect members of all 22 local authorities in Wales. This included the Isle of Anglesey, which was previously up for election in 2013 due to having its elections delayed for a year. Community council elections also took place on the same day. These local elections were held as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. Apart from Anglesey, the last elections were held in 2012. Normally these elections take place every four years, but the 2017 elections were postponed for a year in order to avoid clashing with the 2016 Welsh Assembly election, which itself had been postponed by a year to avoid clashing with the 2015 general election. The UK Independence Party (UKIP; ) is a Eurosceptic, right-wing populist political party in the United Kingdom. The party reached its greatest level of success in the mid-2010s, when it gained two members of Parliament and was the largest party representing the UK in the European Parliament. The Christian Peoples Alliance (CPA) is a Christian rightist political party in the United Kingdom. The party was founded in its present form in 1999, having grown out of a cross-party advocacy group called the Movement for Christian Democracy.
