The 2017 CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves football team represented Colorado State University–Pueblo as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) during 2017 NCAA Division II football season. Led by tenth-year head coach John Wristen, the ThunderWolves compiled an overall record of 9–3 with a mark of 9–1 in conference play, sharing the RMCA title with . CSU Pueblo advanced to the NCAA Division II Football Championship playoffs, where they lost to in the first round. John Wristen
John Wristen (born April 15, 1962) is an American former college football coach and player. He was the head football coach at Colorado State University–Pueblo (CSU Pueblo), a position he held from 2008 until his retirement in 2022. He graduated from CSU Pueblo in 1984, when the school was known as the University of Southern Colorado. The 2017 NCAA Division II football season, part of college football in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level, began on August 31, 2017 and ended with the Division II championship on December 16, 2017 at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. Colorado State University Pueblo (CSU Pueblo) is a public university in Pueblo, Colorado. It is a member of the Colorado State University System (CSU System) and a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). History 1933 to 1959 The idea for starting a college in Pueblo was initially proposed in 1926, when a bill was put before the state Senate to begin a four-year school in the city. The bill was defeated by one vote. In the years following the Great Depression, the idea for a college in Pueblo was revived through the efforts of a local school teacher at Centennial High School, Eric T. Kelly. The NCAA Division II Football Championship is an American college football tournament played annually to determine a champion at the NCAA Division II level. It was first held in 1973, as a single-elimination tournament with eight teams. The tournament field has subsequently been expanded three times; in 1988 it became 16 teams, in 2004 it became 24 teams, and in 2016 it became 28 teams.
