2017 Bohol Clashes
The 2017 Bohol clashes were armed conflicts that took place in April and May 2017 between Philippine security forces and Moro ISIL-affiliated militants led by members of the Abu Sayyaf in Inabanga, Bohol, Philippines. Three Philippine Army soldiers, a policeman, four terrorists and two civilians were killed during the initial firefight. Subsequent firefights between the remaining militants and security forces resulted in the deaths of all the Abu Sayyaf insurgents. A ranking officer of the Philippine National Police linked to Abu Sayyaf attempted to rescue some of the insurgents but was arrested. The clashes marked the first recorded operation of the Abu Sayyaf group in the Visayas region of the Philippines, far from their strongholds in the Sulu Archipelago. The Moro conflict is an insurgency in the Mindanao region of the Philippines, which has involved multiple armed groups, and has been ongoing since March 1968. Jürgen Kantner
Jürgen Gustav Kantner (died 27 February 2017) was a German sailor who was beheaded by Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines. On November 5, 2016, Jürgen and his wife Sabine Merz were attacked while sailing off the coast of the Philippines and Malaysia. During the incident Merz was shot and killed by the gunmen. Kantner was taken as a hostage into the jungles of southern Sulu province, where Abu Sayyaf is based. On or before 27 February 2017, Kantner was beheaded after a ransom of 30 million pesos ($600,000) was not met. Robert Hall (Canadian)
Robert Ward Hall (5 November 1949 – 13 June 2016) was a Canadian citizen kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf militants in the Philippines on 21 September 2015, and beheaded nine months later near Patikul, Sulu. Early life and career Hall was born in Calgary, Alberta. One of five siblings, he grew up in the city's Midnapore district. A welder by trade, Hall was also an experienced pilot and an amateur actor. John Bramwell Ridsdel (9 September 1947 – 25 April 2016) was an English-born Canadian businessman from Calgary, Alberta; kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf militants in the Philippines on 21 September 2015, and beheaded on 25 April 2016. He was 68 years old. Early life and career Ridsdel's family originated from Britain. His mother was a Scottish-born nurse and his father a London-based physician. After moving to Durban, South Africa, and Saskatchewan, Canada, the Ridsdel family returned to Great Britain for a while, before again settling in Canada, first in Vancouver and finally in Calgary. Inabanga River
The Inabanga River is the largest river in Bohol, Philippines. It is long and up to deep at its mouth at the town of Inabanga. Its name means "Rented River", from the root word ''abang'' which means "rent". Due to drownings and attacks by crocodiles (which used to inhabit the river), this loss of life was considered a rent for the use of the river. In May 2017, the Inabanga River was used by heavily armed members of Abu Sayyaf for a planned incursion into Bohol.
