2016–17 Süper Lig
The 2016–17 Süper Lig (known as the ''Spor Toto Süper Lig'' for sponsorship reasons) was the 59th season of the Süper Lig, the highest tier football league of Turkey. The season was named after Turgay Şeren, a legendary goalkeeper of the Turkey national team who also played for and coached Galatasaray. Teams * Adanaspor, Karabükspor and Alanyaspor achieved promotion from 2015–16 TFF First League. Karabükspor made an immediate return, whereas Adanaspor returned to the top level after 12 years in lower leagues. Finally Alanyaspor defeated Adana Demirspor in the play-off final for a debut season at top flight level. The Süper Lig (, ''Super League''), also known as Trendyol Süper Lig for sponsorship reasons, is a professional association football league in Turkey and the highest level of the Turkish football league system. In the 2023–2024 season, twenty clubs compete, where a champion is decided and three clubs are promotion and relegation, promoted from, and another four relegated to the TFF First League, 1. Lig. The season runs from August to May, with each club playing 36 matches. Matches are played Friday through Monday. Turgay Şeren
Turkay Sabit Şeren (15 May 1932 – 7 July 2016) was a Turkish football player, who was a one-time goalkeeper of Galatasaray. He played for Galatasaray between 1947 and 1966 and was capped 52 times for Turkey, including two matches at the 1954 FIFA World Cup. Because of his saves against West Germany in 1951 in Berlin, he is nicknamed as "Berlin Panteri" (Panther of Berlin). He also coached Galatasaray. Şeren was awarded a testimonial match by the club in 1967 in Istanbul, inviting players like Ion Pârcălab, Lev Yashin and Ion Nunweiller. After his retirement, Şeren became a football columnist and a television commentator. He died at age 84 on 7 July 2016.
