2016 Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council Election
The 2016 Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2016 to elect members of Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. One third of the council was up for election, with each successful candidate serving a four-year term of office, expiring in 2020. The Conservative Party held overall control of the council. Trafford is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England, with an estimated population of 235,493 in 2017. The borough was formed in 1974 as a merger of six former districts and part of a seventh. The River Mersey flows through the borough, separating North Trafford from South Trafford, and the historic counties of Lancashire and Cheshire. Village (ward)
Village is an electoral ward of Trafford, Greater Manchester, covering the eastern part of the village of Timperley, including the Village Centre, and part of Brooklands. Upon the seat's creation in 1973, the slate was split between 2 Labour councillors and 1 Liberal. At elections during the rest of the 1970s, the Conservatives eventually gained all three seats. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Conservatives fared less well while they were in Government, and the Liberals (latterly the Liberal Democrats) won the seat at most elections until 2010, the exceptions being 1983, 1987 and 1990.
