2016 Melbourne Cup
The 2016 Emirates Melbourne Cup was the 156th running of the Melbourne Cup, an Australian thoroughbred horse race. The race, run over , was held on 1 November 2016 at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse. The date was a public holiday in the state of Victoria. The final field for the race was declared on 29 October. The total prize money for the race was A$6.2 million, the same as the previous year. The winner was Almandin, ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, who won his 2nd Melbourne Cup after a 16-year gap between his first Melbourne Cup win, and trained by Robert Hickmott. Heartbreak City ran second and Hartnell third. The race was run in 3:20:58. Commentator Greg Miles called his 36th and last Melbourne Cup. Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is an annual Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia, at the Flemington Racecourse. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and older, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club that forms part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest two-mile handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as "the race that stops the nation". The Melbourne Cup has cemented itself as a part of Melbourne and Australian culture, having been run every year since 1861 (except for an intermission during World War I and World War II). Hugh Bowman
James Hugh Bowman is an Australian Horse racing, thoroughbred racing jockey. Based in Sydney, Bowman has won the New South Wales Metropolitan Jockey Premiership four times (2008/09, 2011/12, 2014/15, 2016/17) and has ridden 100 Group One, Group 1 winners. He was the jockey for Australian champion mare Winx (horse), Winx from 2014 through to her retirement in 2019. Ryan Lee Moore (born 18 September 1983) is an English flat racing jockey, who was British flat racing Champion Jockey, Champion Jockey in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Bondi Beach (foaled 23 February 2012) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. Unraced as a juvenile, the colt emerged as a top-class stayer in 2015 with a win in the Curragh Cup. He was awarded the St Leger on the disqualification of Simple Verse but lost the race following an appeal. Background Bondi Beach is a bay stallion bred in Ireland by the One Moment in Time syndicate, a breeding organisation associated with the Coolmore Stud. Ben Melham (born 1988) is an Australian jockey based in Victoria. From Ballarat, where he attended St Patrick's College, Melham began riding professionally in 2003, and reached 100 winners in a season for the first time in 2010/11. Big Orange (foaled 14 February 2011) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. After failing to win a two-year-old he made good progress in 2014, winning three of his six races including the Chester Stakes and Noel Murless Stakes. He emerged a top class performer in the following year, winning the Princess of Wales's Stakes and the Goodwood Cup and took the same two races in 2016. Mark Du Plessis (born 3 October 1975, Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe) is a horse racing jockey. He was champion apprentice jockey in Zimbabwe in 1994/1995 and the winner of Zimbabwe senior jockeys' championship in 1997/1998. Damian Lane
Damian Lane (born 6 February 1994) is an Australian jockey based in Victoria. Lane was born in Bunbury in Western Australia to Michael and Vickey Lane, who were both horse trainers. He grew up around horses, and began his career in Western Australia in 2009, and later moved to Victoria. His first Group One winner was Trust In A Gust in the 2014 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield. As of early May 2025, he has ridden 1,589 winners, including 39 in Group One races.
