2016 AFL Rising Star
The AFL Rising Star is an Australian rules football award presented annually to the player adjudged the best young player in the Australian Football League (AFL) for the year. An eligible player is nominated for the award each round during the AFL's regular season, and a panel of experts vote for the winner at the end of the season. During the 2016 season, the award was sponsored by National Australia Bank. The winner was announced in a presentation held at Crown Palladium on 6 September 2016 and broadcast on subscription television by Fox Footy. The voting panel for the season consisted of ten members, all of whom were AFL officials or former players: Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Mark Evans, Danny Frawley, Glen Jakovich, Cameron Ling, Gillon McLachlan, Matthew Richardson, Warren Tredrea and Kevin Sheehan. Callum Mills
Callum Mills (born 2 April 1997) is a professional Australian rules footballer and co-captain of the Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL). He won the 2016 NAB AFL Rising Star Award for his outstanding breakout season. Early life Mills was born in Sydney and grew up on the Northern Beaches. His grandfather, Ray Mills, played Australian rules football for the Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and represented Western Australia through the 1960s. Callum was an avid Sydney Swans supporter as a child and idolised Swans' forward Tony Lockett. Cameron Ling (born 27 February 1981) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Geelong Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). A tagger at and , Ling is a premiership-winning captain at the club. He is now a commentator on AFL football for the Seven Network and a special comments commentator on AFL football for ABC Grandstand. He is also a member of the selection panel for the AFL All-Australian team and the AFL Rising Star Award. Orazio Maurice Fantasia ( or ; born 14 September 1995) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for Port Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was recruited by the Essendon Football Club with the 55th overall selection in the 2013 national draft. AFL career Fantasia graduated from Norwood Morialta High School in 2013. Kevin Sheehan
Kevin Vincent Sheehan OAM (born 1 August 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer for Geelong and the current Australian Football League (AFL) National Talent and International Manager, a member of the AFL football operations sub-committee and a selector for the AFL Rising Star award. Sheehan played 102 games for Geelong over nine seasons, but only managed 16 senior games in his final three seasons. During this time, however, he won three consecutive reserve grade premierships, captaining the side in 1981. After retiring as a player, Sheehan remained involved in the game, initially as the Victorian State of Origin team manager and then as the AFL national talent identification manager. He is honoured in this role by having the Kevin Sheehan Medal awarded to the best player in each year's Under 16 National Championships.
