2015 Liechtenstein Local Elections
The 2015 Liechtenstein local elections were held on 15 March to elect the municipal councils and the mayors of the eleven Municipalities of Liechtenstein, municipalities of Liechtenstein. Electoral system The municipal councils (German language, German: ''Gemeinderat'') are composed of an even number of councillors plus the mayor (German: ''Gemeindevorsteher''). The number of councillors is determined by population count: 6 or 8 councillors for population 1,500, 8 or 10 councillors for population between 1,500 and 3,000, and 10 or 12 councillors for population over 3,000. Councillors were elected in single multi-member districts, consisting of the municipality's territory, using an open list proportional representation system. Voting was on the basis of universal suffrage in a secret ballot. The mayors were elected in a two-round system. The principality of Liechtenstein is divided into eleven municipality, municipalities (', grammatical number, singular '), most consisting of only a single town. Five of the ' fall within the electoral district of (lower country), while the other six are within the (upper country). The Independents (Liechtenstein)
The Independents (; abbreviated DU, meaning "''YOU''" in German) is a right-wing populist Eurosceptic political party in Liechtenstein. In the 2013 parliamentary election, the first they contested, they won 29,740 votes (15.3%) and four seats in the Landtag. International commentators suggested that the party had benefited from protest votes against austerity measures. From 2013 to 2021 it was led by former Patriotic Union Landtag member Harry Quaderer, and since 2021 by Pio Schurti. History and political positions DU is not a party in the traditional sense, having incorporated as a party solely to take advantage of the financial and political rights associated with that status; its platform calls for Members of the Landtag to be able to vote based on their own convictions rather than party pressures. A municipality is usually a single administrative division having corporate status and powers of self-government or jurisdiction as granted by national and regional laws to which it is subordinate.
