2015 English Greyhound Derby
The 2015 William Hill Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 27 June 2015 at Wimbledon Stadium. 273 of Britain's best greyhounds lined up for the record prize of £250,000 that was on offer. Final result At Wimbledon (over 480 metres): Distances 1¼, short head, 1, ½, 5¼ (lengths) The distances between the greyhounds are in finishing order and shown in lengths. One length is equal to 0.08 of one second. Race Report Farloe Blitz lined up as hot favourite from trap two in the final and when he was first out of the traps in his customary fashion but tucked in just one length behind was Rio Quattro and it remained like that until the third bend when Farloe Blitz drifted to a middle course allowing Rio Quattro to come inside. English Greyhound Derby
The English Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious race on the British greyhound racing calendar, with a history stretching back to 1927. It was first held at White City Stadium, but moved to Wimbledon Stadium in 1985, and then Towcester Greyhound Stadium in 2017, Nottingham in 2019 and back to Towcester in 2021. Only four greyhounds have won the event twice, Mick the Miller, Patricias Hope, Rapid Ranger and Westmead Hawk. Trainer Charlie Lister OBE has won the event a record seven times. Wimbledon Stadium
Wimbledon Stadium, also known as Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, was a greyhound racing track located in Wimbledon in southwest London, England. It also hosted stock car and other small circuit motor racing events, and until 2005 hosted motorcycle speedway. The stadium hosted the English Greyhound Derby every year between 1985 and 2016. Facing declining attendances and with no renovations undertaken for many years, the stadium was put up for sale by the owners, the Greyhound Racing Association, and closed permanently in March 2017. The site was purchased by Galliard Homes Limited, in order to build 600 new apartments and a new football stadium, the new Plough Lane, for AFC Wimbledon. The stadium was demolished in 2018 to clear the site for the new development; it was one of London's last remaining greyhound stadium with only Crayford and Romford left and was the third to close since the turn of the century after Catford Stadium in 2003 and Walthamstow Stadium in 2008. The 2016 William Hill Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 4 June 2016 at Wimbledon Stadium. Jaytee Jet won the final and the winning owner John Turner received £150,000. Henlow Stadium
Henlow Stadium is a greyhound track located at Stondon, in the English county of Bedfordshire, slightly to the north of Hitchin. The stadium has a restaurant, a number of bars and a bistro. Racing takes place every Monday and Thursday morning, Tuesday evening and Saturday and Sunday afternoon. History 20th Century During the boom time of greyhound racing in 1927 Henlow was one of many tracks appearing around Britain, the site at Henlow Camp was previously a straights track starting in 1923. Racing got underway on 1 August 1927 but the track was to remain independent (unlicensed) for nearly fifty years. Westmead Hawk
Westmead Hawk (May 2003 – 26 May 2014) was a black male Greyhound. He was a two-time winner of the English Greyhound Derby in 2005 and 2006, and has drawn comparisons with Mick the Miller and horse Red Rum. Westmead Hawk was the father to two English Greyhound Derby winners – Taylors Sky 2011 and Sidaz Jack 2013. Racing career Hawk was entered in the 2005 English Greyhound Derby. In the final, Hawk started in the fourth trap as the favourite at 5-4 and was lagging behind the leaders after the first bend. A late burst of speed saw him overtake the leader Blonde Mac on the final turn and win the race in 28.56 seconds by a length and three-quarters. This win earned his owners the prize money of £100,000. After his victory, his owners announced that his next target would be the Irish Greyhound Derby. Romford Greyhound Stadium
Romford Greyhound Stadium, referred to as Coral Romford Greyhound Stadium is a greyhound racing track located in Romford town centre in the London Borough of Havering in east London which is owned and operated by the Ladbrokes Coral group. The stadium has a capacity for over 1,700 people. The stadium has won several awards including the British Greyhound Racing Board's 'Racecourse of the Year' award in 1998 and again in 2003. Following the closure of Wimbledon Stadium in March 2017, it is one of only two stadiums left in London or Greater London, the other being Crayford Stadium.
