2014 Philadelphia Union Season
The 2014 Philadelphia Union season was the club's fifth season of existence, competing in Major League Soccer, the top flight of American soccer. The club was initially managed by John Hackworth, in his third season (second full season) with the club. In June, Hackworth was fired from his role as head coach and assistant coach Jim Curtin was promoted on an interim basis. At the conclusion of the season, Curtin was officially made permanent head coach, making him the third head coach in the club's history. The Philadelphia Union are an American professional soccer club based in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The club competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Eastern Conference. Founded on February 28, 2008, the Union began playing in 2010 as an expansion team. The club's home stadium is Subaru Park, a soccer-specific stadium located in Chester, Pennsylvania, on the banks of the Delaware River. Generation Adidas
Generation Adidas is a joint venture between Major League Soccer and U.S. Soccer aimed at raising the level of young professional soccer talent in the United States. The program, sponsored by Adidas, offers professional-ready players in the U.S. developmental system not yet eligible for the MLS SuperDraft early entry, allowing MLS to compete with foreign professional clubs without comparable restrictions on player signing. Ethan White
Norris Ethan White (born January 1, 1991) is an American former professional Association football, soccer player who played as a Defender (association football), defender. He last played for New York City FC in Major League Soccer. Youth and college soccer In high school, White was a four-year starter for the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons in the Montgomery County 3A Division, leading the team to the 2007 Maryland 3A State Championship defeating Bel Air High School 1–0. Amobi Chidubem Okugo (born March 13, 1991) is a Nigerian-American former professional soccer player, athlete entrepreneur, strategist, and speaker. Michael Lahoud (born September 15, 1986) is a Sierra Leonean former footballer. He is a broadcaster for CBS Sports Golazo Network, and a former broadcaster for Austin FC. Aaron Wheeler (born May 11, 1988) is an American former professional soccer player. Career College and amateur Wheeler attended Patapsco High School in Dundalk, Maryland, who he led to the 2005 Baltimore County championship title, and played three years of college soccer at Lenoir-Rhyne University before transferring to Towson University prior to his senior year. Sébastien Le Toux
Sébastien Le Toux (; born 10 January 1984) is a French retired professional footballer who spent the majority of his career in Major League Soccer, including six seasons at the Philadelphia Union. A versatile attacker, who in 2010 became Philadelphia's first All-Star representative, was widely regarded as one of the hardest workers in the league, winning the MLS Individual Fair Play Award in both 2010 and 2011. Designated Player Rule
The Designated Player Rule, nicknamed the Beckham Rule, allows Major League Soccer franchises to sign up to three players that would be considered outside their salary cap (either by offering the player higher wages or by paying a transfer fee for the player). The rule, which was adopted ahead of the 2007 MLS season, enables teams to compete for star players in the international football market. The rule is one of two mechanisms by which MLS teams may exceed their salary cap, the other being allocation money. As of December 2019, there have been 209 Designated Players in league history. James Andrew Wenger (born December 25, 1990) is an American former professional soccer player who played for eight seasons in Major League Soccer. College and amateur career Wenger made an immediate impact in his first year at Duke University. He started in all 21 matches, and finished with four goals and three assists in a team-leading 1,896 minutes of action.
