2014 Macanese Chief Executive Referendum
An unofficial two-part referendum on the Chief Executive of Macau was held in August 2014. Organised by Macau Conscience, Macao Youth Dynamics and Open Macau Society, it asked whether voters supported reforming how the Chief Executive was elected and whether they had confidence in Fernando_Chui, the sole candidate in the 2014 election. Following the organisers' announcement of the proposed referendum, the Macau Government and the Macau Liaison Office issued statements condemning the referendum as "illegal and unconstitutional". Members of the organising committee and volunteers of the referendum were arrested by the police. Despite the forced closure of physical polling stations, the referendum went ahead online between 24 August 2014 and 31 August 2014. Jason Chao
Jason Chao Teng Hei (; born December 12, 1986) was born in Macau. Chao is a social activist and LGBT rights campaigner. He was President of the New Macau Association and Director of the satirical newspaper '' Macau Concealer'', one of the few online pro-democracy media in the city. He co-founded activist organisation Macau Conscience and the Rainbow of Macau. Political stance Jason Chao is one of the few democracy and human rights activists originally from Macau. Chao believes that Macau is idealess and lacks core values. The Court of Final Appeal of Macau ( pt, Tribunal de Última Instância de Macau; ) is the court with the final adjudication power on laws of Macau. Prior to 1999, the highest court was the Higher Court of Justice of Macau and prior to that the Court of Appeal of the Judiciary District of Lisbon in Portugal. Under the Basic Law of Macau, which is the constitutional document of the region, Macau remains the previous legal jurisdiction. Macau elects at the regional level its head of government and legislature. The Legislative Assembly is made up of 33 members, of whom 14 are elected by popular vote under proportional representation, 12 elected from functional constituencies and 7 appointed by the Chief Executive.
