2014 European Election
The 2014 European Parliament election was held in the European Union (EU) between 22 and 25 May 2014. It was the 8th parliamentary election since the first direct elections in 1979, and the first in which the European political parties fielded candidates for President of the Commission. The candidates, sometimes referred to by the German term ''Spitzenkandidaten'' (English: top candidates), were Jean-Claude Juncker for the European People's Party, Martin Schulz for the Party of European Socialists, Guy Verhofstadt for the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party, Ska Keller and José Bové jointly for the European Green Party and Alexis Tsipras for the Party of the European Left. Ska Keller
Franziska Maria "Ska" Keller (; born 22 November 1981) is a German politician and was member of the European Parliament for the Germany constituency from 2009 to 2024. She is a member of the Alliance 90/The Greens, part of the European Green Party. From 2016 to 2022, Keller served as co-president of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament. She has been a member of the Committee on Fisheries (PECH) as well as the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). She was the European Greens' frontrunner during the European elections 2014 together with José Bové and has been elected to lead them again for the European elections 2019, together with Dutchman Bas Eickhout. European People's Party
The European People's Party (EPP) is a European political party with Christian democracy, Christian democratic, liberal conservatism, liberal-conservative, and conservative member parties. A transnational organisation, it is composed of other political parties. Founded by primarily Christian-democratic parties in 1976, it has since broadened its membership to include liberal conservatism, liberal-conservative parties and parties with other centre-right politics, centre-right political perspectives. On 31 May 2022, the party elected as its President Manfred Weber, who was also EPP's ''Spitzenkandidat'' in 2019. 1979 European Parliament Election
The 1979 European Parliament election was a series of parliamentary elections held across all 9 (at the time) European Community member states. They were the first European elections to be held, allowing citizens to elect 410 MEPs to the European Parliament, and also the first international election in history. Seats in the Parliament had been allocated to the states according to population, and in some cases were divided into constituencies, but members sat according to political groups. Background The Treaty of Rome which established the Communities specified that the European Parliament must be elected by universal suffrage using a common voting system. The Council of the European Union was responsible for setting up the elections but it had procrastinated. Elections to the European Parliament take place every five years by universal adult suffrage; with more than 400 million people eligible to vote, they are the second largest democratic elections in the world after India's. Until 2019, 751 MEPs were elected to the European Parliament, which has been directly elected since 1979. Since the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU in 2020, the number of MEPs, including the president, has been 705. David Borrelli (politician)
David Borrelli (born 28 April 1971) is an Italian politician and former member of the European Parliament. Biography In 2005 Borrelli started the Meetup group "Grilli Treviso", which later merged into the M5S. Borrelli was elected to Treviso city council in 2008 and served to 2013, the first M5S city councillor in a provincial capital. Working as a computer specialist, he co-founded an IT company in 2011. In 2010 Borrelli ran for regional elections in Veneto, gathering 80.000 votes (3.16%) but was not elected.
