2014 Dubai World Cup
The 2014 Dubai World Cup was a horse race held at Meydan Racecourse on Saturday 29 March 2014. It was the 19th running of the Dubai World Cup. The winner was Godolphin's African Story, a seven-year-old chestnut gelding trained in Dubai by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by Silvestre de Sousa. African Story's victory was the first in the race for his jockey, the sixth for his trainer and the fifth for his owners. African Story had begun his racing career in France before being sent to race in Dubai and had won four of his eight races on the synthetic Tapeta surface at Meydan. He had also finished behind Animal Kingdom in the 2013 running of the Dubai World Cup. For the 2014 running of the race he started at odds of 12/1 and won by two and three quarter lengths from the British-trained Mukhadram with Cat O'Mountain (also running for Godolphin) four and a quarter lengths back in third. Dubai World Cup
The Dubai World Cup (Arabic: كأس دبي العالمي) is a Thoroughbred horse race held annually since 1996 and contested at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The race is operated by Emirates Racing Authority (ERA) and carries a purse of US$12 million. History The Dubai World Cup was created in 1996 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and the owner of Darley Stud & Godolphin Racing. It is held on the last Saturday in March as the final race of the Dubai World Cup Night. It is a Group 1 flat race on dirt over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 10 furlongs). It is open for Northern Hemisphere Thoroughbred four-year-olds & up and for Southern Hemisphere Thoroughbred three-year-olds & up. Paul Hanagan
Paul Hanagan (born 8 September 1980 in Warrington, Cheshire) is a Classic-winning British flat racing jockey. Hanagan was twice been crowned champion jockey on the flat in Britain, riding 165 winners in 2011 to defend his title, having won his first title with 191 winners in 2010. Over a career spanning 25 years, he won a total of ten Group 1 races including the Epsom Oaks. From 1999 to 2022 he rode for the Malton-based trainer Richard Fahey, except for a four-and-a-half year break when he was retained by owner Sheikh Hamdan. He announced his retirement from race riding in August 2023.
