2013–2015 Detention Of Al Jazeera Journalists By Egypt
On December 29, 2013, three journalists who were working for the Qatari-based international news channel Al Jazeera English, Australian Peter Greste, Canadian Mohamed Fahmy (journalist), Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian Baher Mohamed, were taken into custody by Egyptian security forces at the Cairo Marriott Hotel, Marriott Hotel in Cairo following a raid at their room, which was used for the news channel's remote studio. The Egyptian Interior Ministry confirmed the arrest and said the journalists were accused of reporting news which was "damaging to National security#Africa, national security". On June 23, 2014, after a four-month trial, all three were found guilty and were sentenced to between 7 and 10 years of imprisonment, triggering harsh criticism from various governments and human rights organizations. The Cairo Marriott Hotel is a large hotel located in the Zamalek district of Gezira Island in Egypt and is just west of Downtown Cairo. It is one of the tallest buildings in Cairo. The Marriott opened in 1982, but its central wing was built as the Gezirah Palace for the Khedive Isma'il Pasha in 1869 and converted to a luxury hotel in 1894. Hotel The hotel consists of 1,087 rooms, making it one of the largest hotels in the Middle East. The rooms are located in two identical twenty-story buildings—the Gezira and Zamelek Towers. Situated between them on ground level is the palace and main entrance to the hotel, which—after reconstruction—now contains the reception and administration areas. On the roof of the palace is an open-air theatre which faces the Nile and central Cairo.
