2013 Texas Rangers Season
The 2013 Texas Rangers season was the Rangers' 53rd season of the franchise and the 42nd since the team relocated to Arlington, Texas. The Rangers lost a season ending tie-breaking game against the Tampa Bay Rays on September 30, 2013, and were eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2009. American League West
The American League West is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. The division has five teams as of the 2013 season, but had four teams from 1994 to 2012, and had as many as seven teams before the 1994 realignment. Although its teams currently only reside along the West Coast of the United States, West Coast and in Texas, historically the division has had teams as far east as Chicago and Minnesota. 2013 American League Wild Card Tie-breaker Game
The 2013 American League Wild Card tie-breaker game was a one-game extension to Major League Baseball's (MLB) 2013 regular season, played between the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays to determine the second participant in the 2013 American League (AL) Wild Card Game. It was played at the Globe Life Park in Arlington on September 30, 2013. The Rays defeated the Rangers, 5–2, and advanced to the AL Wild Card Game against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field, which they won 4–0; the Rangers failed to qualify for the postseason. The tie-breaker game was necessary after both teams finished the season with win–loss records of 91–71 and thus tied for the second Wild Card position in the AL. Scott Jeremy Downs (born March 17, 1976) is an American former professional baseball relief pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball for the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago White Sox. He has been a starter, reliever and closer during his baseball career. Amateur career Downs was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. Tanner Ross Scheppers (born January 17, 1987) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Texas Rangers, and in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Chiba Lotte Marines. Prior to playing professionally, he played college baseball at Fresno State. Amateur career Scheppers played shortstop at Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, California. Philip Gregory Humber (; born December 21, 1982) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He pitched for the New York Mets, Minnesota Twins, Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, and Houston Astros in seven seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). Although he debuted in the major leagues in 2006 and had worked mostly as a starter in the minor leagues, he did not become a regular MLB starter until 2011.
