2011 Thurrock Council Election
On 5 May 2011, one-third of seats on Thurrock Council were contested. The result of the election was that Thurrock Council stayed under no overall control. The Labour Party gained one seat from the Conservative Party. Results summary Of the 16 wards that were contested, nine were won by Labour, six by the Conservatives and one by an independent. Council Composition After the election the composition of the council was: Following the election the vote for mayor was tied between Cllr Curtis and deputy mayor Cllr Tunde Ojetola. Outgoing Mayor Anne Cheale exercised her casting vote in favour of Councillor Curtis. In the election for council leader, Councillor Curtis then used his casting vote to elect John Kent as council leader, thus maintaining the Labour administration. 2014 Thurrock Council Election
Elections to Thurrock Council were held on 22 May 2014. The UK Independence Party gained five seats, three from the Conservatives and two from Labour. Of the sixteen wards contested, Labour won six, the UKIP five and the Conservatives five. The council went from Labour-controlled to no overall control. Thurrock Council
Thurrock Council is the local authority for the borough of Thurrock in the ceremonial county of Essex, England. Since 1998 the council has been a unitary authority, being a district council which also performs the functions of a county council. It is a member of the East of England Local Government Association. The council is based in Grays. In 2022 the council's level of debt arising from failed investments led to it issuing a Section 114 notice, being the local authority equivalent of declaring bankruptcy. The government directed neighbouring Essex County Council to take over Thurrock's finances and also appointed a new managing director for the council. Since 2024, the government has planned to abolish the council and merge it with other parts of Essex as part of its planned 2024–present structural changes to local government in England, reorganisation of local government in Essex in 2025, with the next local elections in 2025 likely postponed until 2026. 2012 United Kingdom Local Elections
The 2012 United Kingdom local elections were held across England, Scotland and Wales on 3 May 2012. Elections were held in 128 English local authorities, all 32 Scottish local authorities and 21 of the 22 Welsh unitary authorities, alongside three mayoral elections including the London mayoralty and the London Assembly.
