2012 Minhas Airbase Attack
On 16 August 2012, one soldier was killed and several were injured in a terrorist attack on PAF Base Minhas which houses aircraft manufacturing facilities of the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex. The 9 attackers were later killed by PAF ground units. The TTP claimed responsibility for the attack. Background The spillover of war in neighboring Afghanistan into Pakistan's North West Frontier Province had given birth to terrorist groups like the TTP which aimed to overthrow the democratic government in Pakistan. The Pakistan Armed Forces along with NATO allies had been in war with groups like these for many years. By 2012, the TTP's emir Baitullah Mehsud had been killed in a US drone strike while their ally Al-Qaeda's leader Osama bin Laden was killed during Operation Neptune Spear. Punjab Rangers
The Punjab Rangers (formally Pakistan Rangers (Punjab)) () is a federal paramilitary force in Pakistan. It is one of nine Civil Armed Forces and is one of two Ranger forces with the other one being the Sindh Rangers, which operates in Sindh, Sindh province. The Erieye radar system is an Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C) developed by Saab Electronic Defence Systems, formerly Ericsson Microwave Systems, of Sweden. It uses active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology. The Erieye is used on a variety of aircraft platforms, such as the Saab 340 and Embraer R-99. It has recently been implemented on the Bombardier Global 6000 aircraft as the GlobalEye. Fragmentation (weaponry)
Fragmentation is the process by which the casing, shot, or other components of an anti-personnel weapon, bomb, barrel bomb, land mine, IED, artillery, mortar, tank gun, autocannon shell, rocket, missile, grenade, etc. are dispersed and/or shattered by the detonation of the explosive filler. The correct term for those pieces is "fragments” (nicknamed “splinters” or “shards”). Preformed fragments can be of various shapes (spheres, cubes, rods, etc.) and sizes and are normally held rigidly within some form of matrix or body until the high explosive (HE) filling is detonated. The resulting high-velocity fragments produced by either method are the main lethal mechanisms of these weapons, rather than the heat or overpressure caused by detonation, although offensive grenades are often constructed without a frag matrix. Operation Neptune Spear
On 2 May 2011, the United States conducted Operation Neptune Spear, in which SEAL Team Six shot and killed Osama bin Laden at his " Waziristan Haveli" in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Bin Laden, who founded al-Qaeda and orchestrated the September 11 attacks, had been the subject of a United States military manhunt since the beginning of the War in Afghanistan, but escaped to Pakistan— allegedly with Pakistani support—during or after the Battle of Tora Bora in December 2001.
