The 2012 Johnstown Generals season was the second season for the Ultimate Indoor Football League The Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) was a regional professional indoor football league that began its inaugural season on February 18, 2011 as the Ultimate Indoor Football League before playing as the United Indoor Football League in 2012 ... (UIFL) franchise. On May 15, 2012, the Generals were suspended by the league due to a lack of funds. Cambria County War Memorial Arena
The Cambria County War Memorial Arena is a 4,001-seat multi-purpose arena in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, that is managed by SMG Entertainment. It was built in 1950, for the Johnstown Jets of the Eastern Hockey League. The arena was built on the site of the Union Cemetery, Johnstown's first cemetery. The film '' Slap Shot'', based on the Jets, was filmed in this arena. The arena was the home of the Johnstown Chiefs (ice hockey) for 22 years, but they were relocated in 2010 to Greenville, South Carolina. A banner was hung at the final home game on April 4, 2010 stating "The Greatest Fans in Hockey." It was the alternate venue of the Wheeling Nailers for the following two seasons. 2012 UIFL Season
The 2012 United Indoor Football League season was the second season of the league. The league was split into two conferences, and four divisions (two divisions in each conference). On April 24, the league announced that it had taken over operations of the Mississippi Hound Dogs due to financial difficulty, and modified their schedule to make them a travel-only squad. On May 14, The UIFL suspended the ownership of Johnstown, Western Pennsylvania The result of the Johnstown suspension leads to the cancellation of the June 2 contest with Erie, and sets the field for the North division. Cincinnati, Erie and Marion will spend the final four weeks of the season fighting for playoff seeding. The Palm Beach Phantoms a former NIFL team will replace the Sting for its two games in Florida. Johnstown Generals
The Johnstown Generals was a professional indoor football team that was based in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The Generals began play in 2011 as an expansion team as part of the original Ultimate Indoor Football League six. The fourth indoor football team to play in Johnstown, it succeeded the original Indoor Football League's Johnstown Jackals (2000), the National Indoor Football League's Johnstown J-Dogs (2001), and the American Indoor Football Association's Johnstown Riverhawks (2005–2007). This team was owned by Jeff Bollinger, and played its home games at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Ultimate Indoor Football League
The Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) was a regional professional indoor football league that began its inaugural season on February 18, 2011 as the Ultimate Indoor Football League before playing as the United Indoor Football League in 2012, then switched back to "Ultimate" for the 2013 season. After the 2014 season, the league merged with X-League Indoor Football. History On February 18, 2011, the first-ever UIFL game was played between the Saginaw Sting and the Eastern Kentucky Drillers. The inaugural game was held at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan. The league co-founders are Michael Taylor and Andrew Haines; Haines was also the owner and founder of the Atlantic/American Indoor Football League and the Mid-Atlantic Hockey League. In sport, a bye is the preferential status of a player or team that is automatically advanced to the next round of a tournament, without having to play an opponent in an early round. In knockout (elimination) tournaments they can be granted either to reward the highest ranked participant(s) or assigned randomly, to make a working bracket if the number of participants is not a power of two (e.g. 16 or 32). In round-robin tournaments, usually one competitor gets a bye in each round when there are an odd number of competitors, as it is impossible for all competitors to play in the same round. Cincinnati Gardens was an indoor arena located in Cincinnati, Ohio, that opened in 1949. The 25,000 square foot (2,300 m²) brick and limestone building at 2250 Seymour Avenue in Bond Hill had a entrance that was decorated with six three-dimensional carved athletic figures. When it opened, its seating capacity of 11,000+ made it the seventh largest indoor arena in the United States. The Cincinnati Gardens' first event was an exhibition hockey game. It has been the home of six league championship hockey teams, and most recently was the home of the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the American Hockey League. The 2012 Erie Explosion season was the sixth season for the indoor American football franchise, and their first as a member of the Northern Conference of the United Indoor Football League (UIFL). On August 25, 2011, the Explosion left the Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) and joined the United Indoor Football League. The change reunited Erie with Andrew Haines, who founded the city's previous indoor football team, the Erie Freeze. (The Explosion's departure came two weeks before the SIFL broke up into the Lone Star Football League and the Professional Indoor Football League, neither of which included Pennsylvania in their territories.) The 2012 Marion Blue Racers season was the 2nd season for the United Indoor Football League (UIFL) franchise. On July 5, 2011, the Blue Racers announced they were leaving the CIFL to join the Ultimate Indoor Football League. The Blue Racers were added as a member of the Northern Conference, re-uniting with, their arch-rivals, the Cincinnati Commandos. On August 17, 2011, Lorenzo Styles was named the 3rd head coach in franchise history.
