The Sumgayit FK 2011–12 season was Sumgayit's first Azerbaijan Premier League season, and second season in their history. The finished the season in 12th place, bottom of the Azerbaijan Premier League, Premier League, and reached they First Round of the 2011–12 Azerbaijan Cup, Azerbaijan Cup where they were defeated by Qarabağ FK, Qarabağ. Sumqayıt FK (, ) is an Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani professional Association football, football club based in Sumgayit, Sumgait, that plays in the Azerbaijan Premier League, the top tier of Football in Azerbaijan, football in the country. History The club was founded in 2010 as Sumqayıt FK. In May 2011, the team secured their promotion to Azerbaijan Premier League after getting wildcard place instead of defunct FC Absheron, Absheron. After securing promotion to the Premier League, the club based most of their squad on players from Azerbaijan's Azerbaijan national football team U-19, U-19 and Azerbaijan national under-17 football team, U-17 players. In January 2012, the club announced that its old name was being restored. During 2013–14 Azerbaijan Premier League, 2012–13 season, Sumgayit narrowly avoided relegation to the Azerbaijan First Division, First Division by finishing 10th in the league.
