2011 Thai Division 2 League Northern Region
2011 Regional League Division 2 Northern Region is the third season of the League competition since its establishment in 2009. It is in the third tier of the Thai football league system. The league winners and runners up will qualify for the 2011 Regional League Division 2 championship stage. Regional League Northern Division
Regional League Northern Region is the 3rd Level League in Thailand. It was formed in 2009 along with other four other regional leagues, all playing at the same level. The winner of each regional league enter the Regional League Championships to determine the three teams that will receive promotion to the Thai Division 1 League. League History Formed in 2009, 11 clubs applied to be part of the new setup; Chainat, Chiangmai United, Chiangrai United, Kamphaeng Phet, Phetchabun, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Phrae, Sukhothai, Tak and Uttaradit. Chiangmai United and Phitsanulok were the only two teams with previous experience in the Thai football league system. Chiangrai United led the league from start to finish and duly won the first championship by 14 points. Phichit ( th, พิจิตร, เมือง) is a town (''thesaban mueang'') in central Thailand, capital of Phichit Province. It covers the whole ''tambon'' Nai Mueang of Mueang Phichit district, an area of 12.017 km². As of 2005 it had a population of 23,791. Phichit is 326 km north of Bangkok. Geography Phichit is at the confluence of the Wat Ta Yom River and the Nan River. History The old town of Phichit was established in 1058 CE by Phraya Kotabongthevaraja, and was first part of the Sukhothai kingdom, and later of Ayutthaya. Lamphun ( th, ลำพูน, ) is a town (''thesaban mueang'') in northern Thailand, capital of Lamphun Province. It covers the whole ''tambon'' Nai Mueang of Mueang Lamphun district. As of 2006 it has a population of 14,030. Lamphun lies north of Bangkok and south of Chiang Mai. History Lamphun was founded by Queen Chama Thevi as the capital of the Haripunchai Kingdom, the last and most northerly Mon kingdom in the area which now forms Thailand. Around south of Chiang Mai, it was constructed in the shape of a conch shell, following the Khuang River on its east side and divided by moats at the remaining points of the compass. Queen Chama Thevi is remembered in the wat of her name, which is said to be the resting place of her ashes.
