2011 Champion Hurdle
The 2011 Champion Hurdle was a horse race held at Cheltenham Racecourse on Tuesday 15 March 2011. It was the 81st running of the Champion Hurdle. The winner was George Creighton & Rose Boyd's Hurricane Fly, a seven-year-old gelding trained in Ireland by Willie Mullins and ridden by Ruby Walsh. The victory was the first in the race for owner, trainer and rider. Hurricane Fly won by one and a quarter lengths from Peddlers Cross. There were no previous Champion Hurdlers in the field. All eleven of the runners completed the course. Champion Hurdle
The Champion Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt racing, National Hunt Hurdling (horse race), hurdle race in Great Britain which is open to Horse racing, horses aged four years or older. It is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham Racecourse, Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles and ½ furlong (2 miles and 87 yards or ), with eight hurdles to be jumped. The most prestigious hurdling event in the British calendar, its list of winners features many of the most highly acclaimed hurdlers in the sport's history. The Champion Hurdle is scheduled to take place each year on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival in March and is the last leg of the Triple Crown of Hurdling. Paul Townend
Paul Townend (born 15 September 1990) is an Irish people, Irish jockey who competes in National Hunt racing. From Lisgoold in County Cork, he has been attached to the yard of Irish trainer Willie Mullins since he was fifteen, beginning his career as an apprentice flat racing jockey. Following the retirement of Ruby Walsh in 2019, Townend became the number one jockey to the Willie Mullins, Mullins yard. In 2019 Cheltenham Gold Cup, 2019 he gave Willie Mullins his first Cheltenham Gold Cup winner with Al Boum Photo and he repeated this success in 2020. He recorded his third and fourth win in the race on Galopin Des Champs in 2023 and 2024. Montjeu
Montjeu (4 April 1996 – 29 March 2012) was an Irish-bred, French-trained thoroughbred horse racing racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from September 1998 to November 2000, he ran sixteen times and won eleven races, including six at Group 1. After winning twice as a juvenile, he was the outstanding European racehorse of 1999, winning the Prix du Jockey Club, the Irish Derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Four more victories in 2000 included the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He was then retired to stud where he proved to be an outstanding sire of winners. He died on 29 March 2012 at age 16 at Coolmore Stud from complications related to sepsis. Alan King (horse Racing)
Alan King (born 1966) is a Scottish racehorse trainer specialising mainly in National Hunt racing. He is based at Barbury Castle stables near Wroughton, Wiltshire. Career King was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland on 13 December 1966. He worked in Scotland under John Wilson at Cree Lodge, before joining David Nicholson as assistant trainer until Nicholson's retirement. He then took out a licence to train himself, first at Jackdaw's Castle stables, before moving to Barbury Castle, Wiltshire in June 2000. Robert Thornton (jockey)
Robert "Choc" Thornton (born 14 July 1978 in Darlington) is a retired England, English National Hunt racing, National Hunt jockey. Career Robert "Chocolate" Thornton (known as Choc) was one of the United Kingdom's leading National Hunt jockeys. After growing up riding hunters with his father, a professional Huntsman, he started working for trainer David Nicholson (horse racing), David Nicholson in 1997 as an amateur. After immediate success, he became a Conditional jockey, riding 71 winners during his first season in the sport. He won the Conditional Jockey's title the following year. Timmy Murphy
Timothy James Murphy (born 20 August 1974 in County Kildare, Republic of Ireland, Ireland), known as Timmy Murphy, is a retired Irish jockey who competed mostly in National Hunt racing, National Hunt racing. A multiple Grade 1-winning rider, he is best known for his victory on Comply or Die in the 2008 Grand National. He overcame problems with alcohol, which had led to a prison sentence after a drunken incident on a plane in 2002, to resume a successful career and win the 2005 jump jockey of the year Lester Award. Nigel Twiston-Davies
Nigel Twiston-Davies (born 16 May 1957, Crickhowell) is a British racehorse trainer specialising in National Hunt racing. He is based at stables at Naunton, Gloucestershire. He began training in 1981 and sent out his first winner, Last of the Foxes, at Hereford Racecourse in 1982. He has trained over 1000 winners under National Hunt rules including two winners of the Grand National with Earth Summit in 1998 and Bindaree in 2002, and the winner of the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup with Imperial Commander. Paddy Brennan (jockey)
Paddy Brennan (born 13 April 1981) is a retired Irish jump jockey. He was champion conditional jockey in the 2004/05 season and won the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup on Imperial Commander. He was based in Gloucestershire as stable jockey at Fergal O'Brien's yard for several years before his retirement in April 2024. Early life A native of Ardrahan, County Galway, Brennan was a keen GAA player with dreams of becoming a county hurler. Although not from a racing background, he had a pony and went hunting. Brennan started out in racing at the yard of trainer Jim Bolger with the intention of being a flat jockey but decided to switch to jumps on account of his weight. Dunguib (foaled 8 April 2003) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse who became the second horse to complete the Cheltenham and Punchestown double in 2009 for trainer Philip Fenton and owners Daniel Harnett and Lily Lawlor.
