2010–11 WNBL Season
The 2010–11 WNBL season was the 31st season of competition since its establishment in 1981. A total of 10 teams contested the league. The regular season was played between 9 October 2010 and 13 March 2011, followed by a post-season involving the top five in March 2011. The Canberra Capitals were the two-time defending champions, but were defeated in the Grand Final by the Bulleen Boomers. Broadcast rights were held by free-to-air network ABC. ABC broadcast one game a week, at 1:00PM at every standard time in Australia. Sponsorship included iiNet, entering its first year as league naming rights sponsor. Spalding provided equipment including the official game ball, with Champion supplying team apparel. Women's National Basketball League
The Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is the pre-eminent professional women's basketball league in Australia. It is currently composed of eight teams. The league was founded in 1981 and is the women's counterpart to the National Basketball League (NBL). Several WNBL teams have NBL counterparts. The Adelaide Lightning, Melbourne Boomers, Perth Lynx, Southside Flyers and Sydney Uni Flames are the current WNBL teams sharing a market with an NBL team (the Townsville Fire and University of Canberra Capitals shared a market with the Townsville Crocodiles and Canberra Cannons respectively, before both NBL clubs became defunct). Adelaide Lightning
The Adelaide Lightning is an Australian professional women's basketball team competing in the Women's National Basketball League ( WNBL). The club is based in the city of Adelaide, South Australia. The club was formed in 1993 and they play in the 8,000-seat Titanium Security Arena. History The Adelaide Lightning were formed in 1993 and started playing out of the Clipsal Powerhouse. Since the early 2000s the team has tended to alternate between their current home at the Adelaide Arena (formerly the Powerhouse) and the Wayville Sports Centre located within the Adelaide Showgrounds. The Lightning have won the WNBL Championship five times (1994, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2008). Amy Denson
Amy Denson (born May 3, 1984) is an American former professional basketball player. She played for the Sun Devils in NCAA Division I, making her professional debut in Puerto Rico's Montañeras de Morovis. She played throughout Europe and Australia, finally signing with the Sydney Uni Flames in 2010 to play in the Women's National Basketball League. Marianna Tolo
Marianna Tolo (born 2 July 1989) is an Australian basketball player for the University of Canberra Capitals in Australia's Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). She has also played for the CJM Bourges Basket in the LFB and Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA. She has also been a member of the Australia women's national basketball team. Tolo was a member of the Australian Women's basketball team (Opals) at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Opals were eliminated after losing to the USA in the quarterfinals. The All-WNBL Team is an annual Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) honour bestowed on the best performing players in the league following every WNBL season. WNBL Top Shooter Award
The WNBL Leading Scorer Award is an annual Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) statistical award given since the 1981 WNBL season. The Leading Scorer is determined by the player with the highest average points per game, throughout the regular season. To be eligible, players must have played in at least 50% of games played in the season. From 1981 to 2020, this award was previously known as the ''Top Shooter Award''. Tom Maher
Tom Maher (born 4 September 1952 in Melbourne, Victoria) is an Australian basketball coach, who is the most successful coach in Women's National Basketball League history, having won nine WNBL titles. He coached Nunawading Spectres to six titles, Perth, Canberra and Bulleen to one apiece (A tenth eluded him when in 2001 he had to leave his role as Sydney coach to take up a position in the WNBA. He had Sydney in first place when he left late in the season and it continued on to win the championship with Karen Dalton at the helm.). Carrie Graf, who won seven championships, one with Sydney and six with Canberra, and Jan Stirling who led Adelaide to four titles, are the next most successful WNBL coaches. Rachael Flanagan
Rachael McCully (née Flanagan; born 5 April 1982) is one of Australia's most accomplished female basketballers. During a decorated WNBL career, McCully played for the Adelaide Lightning, Dandenong Rangers and Townsville Fire, earning the WNBL's Robyn Maher Defensive Player of Year award in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. She played her 324th and final WNBL game in the 2014/15 WNBL Grand Final as she led the Townsville Fire to their inaugural championship. The WNBL Defensive Player of the Year Award is an annual Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) award given since the 1990 WNBL season to the best defensive player throughout the regular season. Gretel Bueta (née Tippett; born 3 July 1993) is an Australian netball player and former basketball player. Basketball Bueta played for the Australian Institute of Sport in the Women's National Basketball League during the 2010/2011 season. She played half the season with the Logan Thunder in the 2011/2012 season and was named Rookie of the Year for WNBL in 2011 before pulling out due to glandular fever. The WNBL Youth Player of the Year (formerly the WNBL Rookie of the Year Award) is an annual Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) award given since the 1988 WNBL season.
