2010 Kallang Slashing
The 2010 Kallang slashings refer to a series of four robberies committed by a group of four Malaysians from Sarawak, Malaysia in the night of 29 May 2010 and the early hours of the morning of 30 May 2010 (some of the culprits were not involved in the subsequent four robberies), mostly around Kallang Area, Singapore. In the robberies, there were a total of four victims – the first three victims were seriously injured and hospitalised while a fourth victim was killed. Three of the perpetrators were charged with murder and the final culprit remained on the run for seven years before being arrested and charged with murder. Eventually, two were convicted of murder - with one eventually hanging, hanged in 2019 and the other life imprisonment, jailed for life and caning in Singapore, caned - while the other two were dealt with lengthy jail terms and caning for multiple charges of armed robbery with hurt. Tay Yong Kwang
Tay Yong Kwang is a Singaporean judge of the Supreme Court of Singapore, Supreme Court. He was first appointed Judicial Commissioner in 1997, appointed Judge in 2003, and appointed Judicial officers of the Republic of Singapore, Judge of Appeal in 2016. Caning In Singapore
Caning is a widely used form of corporal punishment in Singapore. It can be divided into several contexts: judicial, prison, reformatory, military, school and domestic. These practices of caning as punishment were introduced during the period of British colonial rule in Singapore. Similar forms of corporal punishment are also used in some other former British colonies, including two of Singapore's neighbouring countries, Malaysia and Brunei. Of these, judicial caning is the most severe. It is applicable to only male convicts under the age of 50 for a wide range of offences under the Criminal Procedure Code, up to a maximum of 24 strokes per trial.
