2010 CIS University Cup
The 2010 Canadian Interuniversity Sport, CIS Men's CIS University Cup, University Cup Hockey Tournament (48th Annual) was held March 25–28, 2010. It was the second year of a two-year CIS Championship bid by Lakehead University and hosted at Fort William Gardens hockey rink. The UNB Varsity Reds would not be defending their title from 2009, despite a 27–1 record, as they lost in the second round of the AUS playoffs and did not advance. Similar to previous years, going back to the introduction of the expanded format in 1998, the six invited teams were split into two Pools of three where each team plays the other(two games total). The best team in each Pool advances to the final. All pool games must be decided by a win, there are no ties. If a pool has a three-way tie for 1st (all teams have 1–1 records) than GF/GA differential among the tied teams is the first tie-breaker. Fort William Gardens
The Fort William Gardens is a multi-purpose arena, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. It opened in 1951. History The Gardens opened on March 6, 1951. The Fort William Canadians defeated the Westfort Hurricanes, Fort William Hurricanes by a 4–2 score in the first game, which was refereed by Fred Page and with a paid attendance of 5,200 tickets. The isolation of Thunder Bay and travel costs have prevented the Gardens from retaining most teams. It hosted an NHL pre-season game in 1993 between the Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals, and two pre-season AHL games in 2002 with St. John's Maple Leafs vs. Manitoba Moose, and 2 in 2003 with Manitoba Moose vs. Toronto Roadrunners. The Gardens has hosted the 1975 Allan Cup, the 1988 Allan Cup, and 1991 Allan Cup, representing the Grand Championship of Canadian Senior hockey. McGill Redbirds Ice Hockey
The McGill Redbirds ice hockey team is an ice hockey team representing the McGill Redbirds and Martlets athletics program of McGill University. The team is a member of the Ontario University Athletics conference and compete in U Sports. The Redbirds play their home games at the McConnell Arena in Montreal, Quebec. History In 1873, James Creighton, along with several students from McGill, reportedly attempted to play a version of lacrosse on the Victoria Skating Rink. Shortly thereafter, Creighton drew up the first set of rules for "ice hockey". While its unknown if this story is true, what is known is that two years later, Creighton led two contingents of McGill students onto the Victoria Rink for the first indoor ice hockey game in history. Manitoba Bisons
The Manitoba Bisons are the athletic teams that represent the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The football team plays at Princess Auto Stadium, the soccer team plays at the outdoor soccer field on campus, track and field teams use University Stadium (Winnipeg), University Stadium, and the volleyball and basketball teams play at Investors Group Athletic Centre. Saint Mary's Huskies
The Saint Mary's Huskies are the men's and women's athletic teams that represent Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Their primary home turf is Huskies Stadium, located in the centre of the university's campus. In September 2007, Saint Mary's announced the plans to build the new Homburg Centre for Health & Wellness, that will comprise the current gymnasium (The Tower), the new Dauphinee Arena, and a new building to connect the two. The centre is to be named after Richard Homburg, who provided a $5 million gift to the project, the largest gift the university has received in its 205-year history. The Lakehead Thunderwolves are the U Sports varsity athletic teams that represent Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Overview The Lakehead Thunderwolves are perennial powers in the OUA and U Sports in Nordic Skiing and wrestling. The women's and men's Nordic ski teams won both the OUA conference and CIS-CCUNC national team championships in both 2005 and 2006. Alberta Golden Bears
The Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas are the sports teams that represent the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Alberta athletics teams have won a total of 101 national championships, including 84 in U Sports sanctioned sports, making it one of the most successful programs in the country. The 2007 CIS Men's University Cup Hockey Tournament (45th Annual) was held March 22–25, 2007, at the J. Louis Levesque Arena in Moncton, New Brunswick. The Moncton Aigles Bleus served as tournament host. UQTR Patriotes Men's Ice Hockey
The UQTR Patriotes men's ice hockey team is an active ice hockey team representing the UQTR Patriotes athletics program of Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. The team is a member of the Ontario University Athletics conference and competes in U Sports. The Patriotes play their home games at the Colisée Jean-Guy Talbot in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. History From the very foundation of the university in 1969, UQTR has sponsored ice hockey as a varsity sport. Initially a member of the Ottawa–St. Lawrence Conference (OSLC), the Patriotes were placed in the Quebec Universities Athletic Association (QUAA) in 1971 when four separate conferences were realigned into two provincial leagues for teams in Quebec and Ontario. The 2005 CIS Men's University Cup Hockey Tournament (43rd annual) was held at the Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton, Alberta. The Alberta Golden Bears served as tournament host. Road to the Cup AUS playoffs Note: * denotes overtime period(s) OUA playoffs Note: * denotes overtime period(s) Canada West playoffs Note: * denotes overtime period(s) University Cup The rotating wild-card moved to Canada West. Since host Alberta also won the league championship, the conference received a second wild-card bid. Canada West held a third-place series to determine the second wild-card entrant. Manitoba Bisons Men's Ice Hockey
The Manitoba Bisons men's ice hockey team is an ice hockey team representing the Manitoba Bisons athletics program of University of Manitoba. The team is a member of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association conference and compete in U Sports. The Bisons play their home games at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg, Manitoba. History Manitoba iced its first varsity ice hockey team in 1908, roughly around the same time that other schools in Western Canada were laying the foundation for college hockey in the region. For the first few years, the team played out of the provincial senior league, winning the Pattison Cup in 1910.
