2009–10 Croatian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Croatia on 27 December 2009 and 10 January 2010. Twelve candidates participated in the first round, prior to a run-off between first-round winner Ivo Josipović and runner-up Milan Bandić. In the run-off, Josipović won a landslide victory, receiving 60.3% of the vote becoming the first elected president nominated by the Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP). The incumbent president Stjepan Mesić, who was first elected in 2000 as the candidate of the Croatian People's Party and re-elected in 2005 as an independent, was ineligible to seek re-election to a third term due to term limits. As the incumbent was ineligible for re-election, several candidates took the opportunity to run for the presidency. Ivo Josipović
Ivo Josipović (; born 28 August 1957) is a Croatian academic, jurist, and politician who served as President of Croatia from 2010 to 2015. Josipović entered politics as a member of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia (SKJ), and played a key role in the democratic transformation of the League of Communists of Croatia (SKH) into the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the author of its first statute. He left politics in 1994, but returned in 2003, winning a seat in the Croatian Parliament running as an independent candidate on the SDP party list. He won re-election to parliament as a member of the SDP in 2007. In addition to politics, Josipović has also worked as a university professor, legal expert, musician and composer, and holds a Ph.D. in Law and advanced degrees in music composition. Zagreb
Zagreb ( , , , ) is the capital and largest city of Croatia. It is in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. 2009 Zagreb Local Elections
On 17 May 2009, local elections were held in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. The incumbent mayor was Milan Bandić ( elected in 2005), a representative of the Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP), also the leading party in the previous city council. Bandić was reelected mayor in the second round of the elections with 61.84% of the votes. Dragan Primorac (born June 7, 1965) is a Croatian physician, geneticist and forensic scientist. He is the first recipient of the title "Global Penn State University Ambassador". Currently, he serves as the Chair of the International Affairs Committee of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and as President of the International Society for Applied Biological Sciences. He is a member of the International Consortium for Personalised Medicine Executive Committee (IC PerMEd) established by The European Commission. Slobodna Dalmacija
''Slobodna Dalmacija'' () is a Croatian daily newspaper published in Split. The first issue of ''Slobodna Dalmacija'' was published on 17 June 1943 by Tito's Partisans in an abandoned stone barn on Mosor, a mountain near Split, while the city was occupied by the Italian army. The paper was later published in various locations until Split was liberated on 26 October 1944. From the following day onward, ''Slobodna Dalmacija'' has been published in Split. Nadan Vidošević
Nadan Vidošević (born 30 January 1960) is a Croatian politician, businessman and entrepreneur arrested on 12 November 2013, on the charge of misappropriating 32.9 million kunas (US$5,784.363) from Croatian Chamber of Commerce. He was a long-time member of the Croatian Democratic Union, before launching an independent and ultimately unsuccessful candidacy in the 2009–10 Croatian presidential election. Andrija Hebrang (son)
Andrija Hebrang (; born 27 January 1946) is a Croatian physician and politician. A member of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), he is a former member of the Croatian Parliament. A physician by vocation, Hebrang had served three terms as Croatia's Minister of Health (1990–1992, 1993–1998, and 2003–2005) and spent three months as Minister of Defence (May–October 1998) under six different Prime Ministers.
