Australian Women's Ice Hockey League
The Australian Women's Ice Hockey League (AWIHL) is Australia's top-tier women's ice hockey league. Established in 2005 as Australia's first women's national league, the AWIHL has Amateur sports, amateur status and is sanctioned by Ice Hockey Australia (a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation). The AWIHL is currently contested by six teams from five States and territories of Australia, Australian states, including South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia and Victoria (state), Victoria. The league champion is awarded the Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy and the premier is awarded The Gower Memorial Shield (which replaced the Stephanie Boxall Trophy in 2023). Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy
The Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy is the annually awarded championship trophy, of the Australian Women's Ice Hockey League (AWIHL), to the winner of the AWIHL finals. Originally donated in 1995, the trophy is named after Joan McKowen who died September 15, 1992 and her husband Maxwell McKowen died in 2010. This trophy originated from a women's ice hockey championship tournament that started in 1994, which was a competition that was hosted in Queensland between a New South Wales team and a Queensland team competing. This invitational Women's tournament was just the beginning and saw the New South Wales team winning the championship. From this competition, the Joan McKowen Memorial Trophy began, first being awarded in February 1995. The Australian Ice Hockey Federation, currently trading as Ice Hockey Australia (IHA), is the official national governing body of ice hockey in Australia and is a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation. Penrith Ice Palace
The Penrith Ice Palace (also known as Penrith Ice Rink.) was an ice sports and public skate centre, located west of Sydney in Penrith, New South Wales, Penrith, New South Wales, Australia. It permanently closed on Wednesday 29 June 2022. It served as the home ice rink of the Penrith Valley Figure Skating Club, Australian Junior Ice Hockey League, AJIHL teams Sydney Sabres (formally Sydney Lightning) and Sydney Wolf Pack (formally Sydney Maple Leafs). The Ice Arena (stylised as IceArenA), formerly Snowdome and Mt Thebarton Snow and Ice, is an ice sports and public skate centre, located in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia. The centre is the home of the Ice Factor Foundation Inc and the ice sports associations (SAISA, IHSA, and BASA), and their respective clubs, including Adelaide Adrenaline ( AIHL), Adelaide Rush ( AWIHL), and Adelaide Generals (AJIHL). Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink
Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink was an ice sports and public ice skating centre, located in the Sydney suburb of Canterbury, New South Wales. It hosted a number of major ice hockey games, including East Coast Super League games. The venue offered a wide variety of activities including ice skating lessons, birthday parties, figure skating, speed skating, synchronised skating, public skating sessions. It was also the home venue of the Sydney Figure Skating Club, Sydney Arrows (speed skating), Canterbury Ice Hockey Club and the East Coast Super League, Sydney's elite ice hockey tournament. In August 2022, Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink was shut down after structural engineers found the roof at risk of collapse.
