2009 New Zealand NBL Season
The 2009 NBL season was the 28th season of the National Basketball League. Two changes occurred for the 2009 season, with the Christchurch Cougars replacing the Canterbury Rams, and the Otago Nuggets also withdrawing. The Waikato Pistons won the championship in 2009 to claim their fourth league title. National Basketball League (New Zealand)
The New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL) is a men's professional basketball league in New Zealand. History The 1980s ushered in a period of exceptional growth and popularity for basketball in New Zealand. Late in 1981, six men's teams – a mixture of club and provincial representative sides – went out alone and created an inaugural national league. It was enough of a success to come under the control of the New Zealand Basketball Federation the following year, when it grew in size and secured a naming sponsor. An allowance of two imported players (invariably Americans with college basketball experience) per team, and the fact that games were played in the evening indoors, helped turn the league into a new family entertainment option. Corey Webster (basketball)
Corey Webster (born 29 November 1988) is a New Zealand professional basketball player for the Manawatu Jets of the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL). He joined the New Zealand Breakers of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) for the first time in 2008 after a season of college basketball in the United States for Lambuth University, and won championships with the club in 2011, 2013 and 2015. He has also been a regular in the New Zealand NBL, winning championships with the Wellington Saints in 2011, 2014 and 2017, and with the Canterbury Rams in 2023. He has had stints in Serbia, Greece, Israel, China, Italy and Egypt, winning the 2023 BAL championship with Al Ahly. Adam Ballinger
Adam Ballinger (born June 12, 1979) is an American-Australian former professional basketball player who spent his entire career in the Australian National Basketball League, playing 12 seasons for various clubs such as the Victoria Giants, Wollongong Hawks, Adelaide 36ers and Melbourne Tigers. He also spent time in Puerto Rico, New Zealand and Israel during the Australian NBL off-seasons. College career Ballinger committed to the Michigan State Spartans after a stellar prep career at Bluffton High School in Indiana, where he garnered Honorable Mention All-American honours his senior year. His freshman year, he redshirted after fracturing his fibula. Dean Vickerman
Dean Vickerman (born 5 July 1971) is an Australian professional basketball coach and former player who is the head coach of Melbourne United of the National Basketball League (NBL). Early life Vickerman was born and raised in Warragul, Victoria. Playing career Vickerman played for the Melbourne Tigers of the NBL from 1990 to 1992. He averaged 1.1 points, 0.1 rebounds and 0.2 assists in 16 games. Coaching career Between 1997 and 2001, Vickerman served as an assistant coach for the North Melbourne Giants, head coach of the Rockhampton Rockets, and assistant coach of the Sydney Panthers. Block (basketball)
In basketball, a block or blocked shot occurs when a defensive player legally deflects a field goal (basketball), field goal attempt from an offensive player to prevent a score. The defender is not allowed to make contact with the offensive player's hand (unless the defender is also in contact with the ball) or a ''Foul (basketball), foul'' is called. In order to be legal, the block must occur while the shot is traveling upward or at its apex. A deflected field goal that is made does not count as a blocked shot and simply counts as a successful field goal attempt for shooter plus the points awarded to the shooting team. For the shooter, a blocked shot is counted as a missed field goal attempt. Paul Henare
Paul Donald Henare (born 4 March 1979) is a New Zealand professional basketball coach and former player. Junior career Henare attended Napier Boys' High School and played one season of college basketball for Utah Valley State College. He played for New Zealand at U/16, U/18 and U/20 junior levels. Professional career New Zealand NBL Henare began his playing career in 1995 with the Hawke's Bay Hawks. After three seasons with the Hawks, he joined the Auckland Stars, where he won championships in 1999 and 2000. He returned to Hawke's Bay in 2002 and played the next seven seasons there, helping the Hawks win their inaugural championship in 2006. In 2009, he played for the Christchurch Cougars, and in 2010, he played his final season with the Hawks. In basketball, an assist is attributed to a player who passes the ball to a teammate in a way that leads directly to a score by field goal (basketball), field goal, meaning that they were "assisting" in the basket. In basketball, a rebound, sometimes colloquially referred to as a board, is a statistic awarded to a player who retrieves the ball after a missed field goal or free throw. Rebounds in basketball are a routine part in the game; if a shot is successfully made possession of the ball will change, otherwise the rebound allows the defensive team to take possession. Timothy Behrendorff (born 26 September 1981) was an Australian professional basketball player. Behrendorff attended college at Gardner–Webb University in the United States from 2000 to 2004. Mychal Green
Mychal Green (born January 15, 1983, in Columbus, Ohio, United States ) is an American professional basketball player. He is a 6'4" guard and plays for the Glasgow Rocks. Green played his first two years of collegiate basketball for the Ohlone College Renegades in California. In 2004–05, he then transferred to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. As a junior at Ohio, he led the team in scoring, averaging 15.0 points a game, 11th best in the Mid-American Conference.
