2009 Nevada Wolf Pack Football Team
The 2009 Nevada Wolf Pack football team represented the University of Nevada, Reno in the 2009 NCAA Division I FBS football season. Nevada competed as a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The Wolf Pack were led by Chris Ault in his 25th overall and 6th straight season since taking over as head coach for the third time in 2004. They played their home games at Mackay Stadium. The Wolf Pack finished the regular season 8–4 and 7–1 in the WAC, good enough for second place in the conference behind Boise State. They lost to SMU in the Hawaii Bowl. Chris Ault
Christopher Thomas Ault (born November 8, 1946) is a former American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served three stints at the head football coach at the University of Nevada, Reno (1976–1992, 1994–1995 and 2004–2012), leading the Nevada Wolf Pack to a record of 234–108–1 over 28 seasons and guiding the program from the NCAA's Division II to Division I-AA in 1978 and then to Division I-A in 1992. Ault was also the athletic director at Nevada from 1986 to 2004. He was the school's starting quarterback from 1965 to 1968. He is a former consultant for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). Ault was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2002, seven years after his first retirement from coaching in 1995. He also coached in the Italian Football League. 2009 Idaho Vandals Football Team
The 2009 Idaho Vandals American football team represented the University of Idaho during the 2009 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Vandals, led by third-year head coach Robb Akey, were members of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and played their home games at the Kibbie Dome, an indoor facility on campus in Moscow, Idaho. By winning seven games, the Vandals achieved a winning record for the first time since 1999 and were bowl eligible for the first time since 1998. They won six of their first seven games in 2009, but lost four of five conference games to finish at 7–5 in the regular season, and placed fourth (4–4) in the nine-team WAC. Idaho was invited to the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, in which they defeated the Bowling Green Falcons (7–5) of the MAC on December 30, by a score of 43–42. Fremont Cannon
The Fremont Cannon is the trophy awarded to the winner of the Battle for Nevada (also known as the Nevada–UNLV football rivalry), an American college football rivalry game played annually by the Nevada Wolf Pack football team of the University of Nevada, Reno (Nevada) and the UNLV Rebels football team of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The trophy was built in 1970 and is a replica of a 19th-century Howitzer cannon that accompanied American explorer and politician John C. Frémont on an expedition to the American West and Nevada in the mid 19th century. The original cannon had been abandoned, due to heavy snows, in the Sierra Nevada in 1843. The replica cannon was originally fired following a touchdown by the team in possession of the cannon, but it has been inoperable since 1999. The 2009 UNLV Rebels football team was the 42nd varsity football team to represent the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Rebels play in the Mountain West Conference and compete each season against the remaining eight members of the conference and one permanent interstate rival: Nevada.
