2009 Challenge Tour
The 2009 Challenge Tour was the 21st season of the Challenge Tour, the official development tour to the European Tour. The tour started as the Satellite Tour with its first Order of Merit rankings in 1989 and was officially renamed as the Challenge Tour at the start of the 1990 season. The Challenge Tour Rankings were won by Italy's Edoardo Molinari. Schedule The following table lists official events during the 2009 season. Challenge Tour Rankings ''For full rankings, see 2009 Challenge Tour graduates.'' The rankings were based on prize money won during the season, calculated in Euros. The top 20 players on the tour earned status to play on the 2010 European Tour. Edoardo Molinari
Edoardo Molinari (born 11 February 1981) is an Italian professional golfer who plays on the European Tour, where he is a three-time winner. He was also the 2005 U.S. Amateur champion; 2009 Challenge Tour Rankings leader; winner, with his brother Francesco, of the 2009 World Cup; and a member of the 2010 European Ryder Cup winning team. He has won professional tournaments on four of six continents on which golf is played: Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. He is a Vice-Captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Marco Simone, Italy. Background Molinari was born in Turin to Micaela, a now retired architect, and Paolo Molinari, a dentist. He began to accompany his father to the golf course at age eight. Credit Suisse Challenge
The Swiss Challenge is a golf tournament on the Challenge Tour, held in Switzerland, except in 2021, when it was held in France. History It was first played as the Credit Suisse Private Banking Open in 2000 and 2001 at the Golf Club Patriziale Ascona in Ascona. It replaced the Interlaken Open which ended after financial issues. During the course of the 2002 edition, the heavy rain led to the overflow of the Lake Maggiore and to the cancellation of the event. Following a four-year hiatus, the tournament returned in 2006 and was held at the Wylihof Golf Club in Luterbach through 2009. Since 2010 the event has been played at Golf Sempachersee in Hildisrieden. In 2021, the event was uniquely held in France. Andrew Butterfield
Andrew Butterfield (born 1 July 1972) is an English professional golfer. He played on the European Tour and its development tour, the Challenge Tour, between 1996 and 2012. He won one tournament on the Challenge Tour, in June 2009 at The Princess in Sweden. Career Butterfield was born in London, England. He turned professional in 1993. In 1995, he won the Kent Open and gained a place on the Challenge Tour for the following season. He played on the Challenge Tour until qualifying for the European Tour through Q-School in 1999. Butterfield did not perform well enough on tour in 2000 to retain his card and had to go back to the Challenge Tour in 2001. He got his European Tour card back through Q-School again in 2001 and played on the European Tour in 2002 but did not find any success on tour. 2009 European Tour
The 2009 European Tour was the 38th series of golf tournaments since the European Tour officially began in 1972. There were major changes for the 2009 season as the tour entered a partnership agreement with Dubai based Leisurecorp. The Order of Merit was renamed the Race to Dubai with the addition of a new season ending tournament, the Dubai World Championship, being contested by the leading 60 players after the penultimate event for a US$7.5 million prize fund and a US$7.5 million bonus pool. The season began with five events in late 2008 and consisted of 54 official money tournaments. This was an increase of four from the previous year, although three events were ultimately cancelled, and included the four major championships and four World Golf Championships, which are also sanctioned by the PGA Tour. 27 events took place in Europe, 14 in Asia, 6 in the United States, 3 in South Africa and 3 in Australia. Christian Nilsson (golfer)
Christian Lars Nilsson (born 25 May 1979) is a Swedish former professional golfer. Professional career Nilsson was born in Karlstad, Sweden. He turned professional in 1999 with a plus 3 handicap. Nilsson played on the Challenge Tour full-time since 2004, playing few events before then. His first event on the European Tour was the 2005 Open Championship where he missed the cut. His first full season on the European Tour was 2006, and his second in 2007. In 2008 he played on both the Challenge and European Tours with his best finish a runner-up to David Dixon at the Saint-Omer Open, but he did not break through until 2009 at the same event. The Saint-Omer Open is an annual men's professional golf tournament played at Saint-Omer Golf Club in Saint-Omer, France. The tournament was founded in 1997 and was part of the MasterCard Tour a year later, before taking its place on the Challenge Tour for the 2000 season. Christoph Joseph Günther (born 22 July 1975) is a German professional golfer who has played on the Challenge Tour and the EPD Tour. Günther was born in Göttingen. He mainly played on the EPD Tour since turning professional in 1995. He won 10 times on the EPD Tour between 2001 and 2012. Günther won his first tournament on the Challenge Tour in 2009 at the Kärnten Golf Open. He entered the final round five strokes behind the leader but shot a fantastic final round of 62 (-10) to win by a stroke. The Kärnten Golf Open was a golf tournament on the Challenge Tour, played in Austria. It was held for the first time in 2009. It was contested over the Pete Dye designed course at the Golf Club Klagenfurt-Seltenheim in Klagenfurt from 2009 to 2012. In 2013 it moved to Jacques Lemans Golf Club in Sankt Georgen am Längsee. In 2014 it moved to the Golfclub Schloss Finkenstein in Gödersdorf. François Calmels (born 11 December 1981) is a French professional golfer who currently plays on the European Tour. Career Calmels was born in Paris. He was a distinguished amateur, winning the 2004 Coupe Mouchy (highest amateur competition in France), and the 2006 Portuguese Amateur Open Championship.
