2008–09 Libyan Premier League
The 2008–09 Libyan Premier League season was the 42nd edition of the competition since its establishment in 1963. Al Ittihad Tripoli, Al Ittihad were the defending champions, having won their fourteenth Libyan Premier League title with just one round of matches to spare in 2007–08 Libyan Premier League, the previous season. The campaign began on Friday October 17, 2008, delayed due to Libya's 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification (CAF), World Cup qualifiers, and, depending on the Libyan Cup, is scheduled to finish on June 26, 2009. A total of 16 teams contested the league, including 13 who competed in the previous season and three promoted from the Libyan Second Division. (see 2007–08 Libyan Second Division) The first goal of the season was scored by newly promoted Wefaq Sabratha's Stefan de Paul against 2003-04 champions Al Olympic Zaouia, Al Olomby in the thirty-second minute of the game on the opening day of the season on October 17. Libyan Premier League
The Libyan Premier League () is the men's top professional football division of the Libyan football league system. Administered by the Competition Organizing Committee in the Libyan Football Federation, Libyan Premier League is contested by 22 teams divided into two groups of 11 (previously 20, split into groups of 10. changed as of the 23/24 season), with the two lowest-placed teams of each group relegated to the First Division. 51 teams have competed in Libyan Premier League since its inception. Ten teams have been crowned champions, with Al-Ittihad winning the title a record 18 times and Al-Ahly Tripoli 13 times. Al-Ahly Tripoli won the inaugural Premier League in 1963. Al-Ahly Tripoli and Al-Ahly Benghazi dominated the championship in the 1970s, winning four titles and two titles respectively throughout the decade.
